TL;DR: Immediate postpartum IUD insertion was found to decrease the incidence of side-effects but resulted in a higher expulsion rate than when post partum Iud insertion was delayed.
Abstract: A follow-up study of 27 months from February 1965 to May 1967 is presented of 284 women inserted with Lippes loop intrauterine devices either 6 weeks or later after delivery (Groups A) or within 10 days of delivery (Group B). Follow-up clinic visits were scheduled every 3 months and 11 women were lost to follow-up. 90-95 percent of the IUD acceptors were under 35 years of age and 65-72 percent had 2-4 children. Abdomen and backpain was commonly reported by Group A acceptors and bleeding was frequently seen in Group B acceptors. Both of these side-effects were more common in those women with the 30 mm Lippes loop. There were 36 cases of removal because of these side-effects. Total removal rates were 34.4 percent in Group A AND 11.1 PERCENT in Group B. THE REMOVAL RATE DECREASED WITH INCREASING AGE and parity and IUD size. Group A had an expulsion rate of 13.7 percent and Group B had a 28.7 percent expulsion rate. 2 of the 48 women using the 25 mm loop became pregnant. The overall retention rate in this study after 27 months was 65 percent. Immediate postpartum IUD insertion was found to decrease the incidence of side-effects but resulted in a higher expulsion rate than when postpartum IUD insertion was delayed.
