TL;DR: In this article, the authors examine how gender and sexual imagery in public language changed as the century progressed, and analyze the construction of boundaries between private and public spheres and examine the American political system's failure to accommodate difference within democratic order.
Abstract: On May 15, 1862, U.S. General Benjamin Butler, commander of occupied New Orleans, ordered that any woman who publicly insulted Union soldiers be subject to prosecution as a prostitute. Not all nineteenth-century women, Butler learned, felt their place was in the home. As his order implies, women were governed by an unwritten code of public conduct, appeared on public streets, spoke out on public issues, and were subjects of public policy. In \"Women in Public\" noted historian Mary P. Ryan examines each of these issues as it affected women in New York, New Orleans, and San Francisco. Contrary to current perceptions, Ryan contends, nineteenth-century women appeared in public in a variety of roles. They took part in civic ceremonies, from Independence Day celebrations to ethnic festivals. Whether they sonsorted in parks designed for \"ladies\" or in the increasingly regulated haunts of prostitutes, their place in the everyday life of the streets became more segregated and distinct. Denied access to the voting booth, they practiced \"outdoor politics,\" waving handkerchiefs at rallies--and wielding brickbats in riots. Exploring little-noted aspects of nineteenth-century political discourse, Ryan shows how gender and sexual imagery in public language changed as the century progressed. She analyzes the construction of boundaries between private and public spheres and examines the American political system's failure to accommodate difference within democratic order.

Abstract: THE STORY OF HOW COTTON CULTIVATION BEGAN IN THE SOUTH took shape early in the crop's history and has received surprisingly little revision. Since the early 1800s historians, with a few exceptions,' have used 1793, the year that Eli Whitney made his improved cotton gin, as the pivotal date in the crop's history because it demarcated a turn in the crop's commercial fortunes. Scholars have assumed that before 1793 cotton's history was relatively uninteresting because the crop was not yet commercially important; they then explain that cotton cultivation rapidly expanded after this date because entrepreneurs were responding to the market incentive created by the British textile industry.2 Though these cotton producers eagerly

TL;DR: The Disappearing South as discussed by the authors is a collection of essays about the changing nature of the South since World War II, focusing on the extent to which the forces of nationalization have eroded the major elements of Southern distinctiveness.
Abstract: Normal0falsefalsefalseMicrosoftInternetExplorer4There is widespread agreement that the South has changed dramatically since the end of World War II. Social, demographic, economic, and political changes have altered significantly the region long considered the nation s most distinctive. There is less agreement, however, about the extent to which the forces of nationalization have eroded the major elements of Southern distinctiveness. Although this volume does not purport to settle the debate on Southern political change, it does present a variety of recent evidence that helps put this important debate into perspective. In the process it helps clarify the contemporary politics of the South for readers ranging from the scholar to the more casual observer. The essays in "The Disappearing South" address the ongoing debate. TL;DR: The "Encyclopedia of Southern Culture" as discussed by the authors is the first attempt to describe every aspect of a region's life and thought, the impact of its history and policies, music and literature, its manners and myths, even the iced tea that washes down its catfish and cornbread.
Abstract: The American South is a geographical entity, a historical fact, a place in the imagination, and the homeland of an array of Americans who consider themselves southerners. The region is often shrouded in romance and myth, but its realities are as intriguing, as intricate, as its legends. The "Encyclopedia of Southern Culture" is "the first attempt ever" notes "U.S. News & World Report," "to describe every aspect of a region's life and thought, the impact of its history and policies, its music and literature, its manners and myths, even the iced tea that washes down its catfish and cornbread."There are many Souths, many southerners. The region's fundamental uniqueness, in fact, lies in its peculiar combination of cultural traits, a somewhat curious, often elusive blend created by blacks and whites who have lived together for more than 300 years. In telling their stories, the "Encyclopedia of Southern Culture" ranges from grand historical themes to the whimsical; from the arts and high culture (William Faulkner and Leontyne Price) to folk culture (quilts, banjos, and grits) to popular culture (Gilley's and "Gone With the Wind").The "Encyclopedia"'s definition of the South is a cultural one: the South is found wherever southern culture is found. Although the focus is on the eleven states of the former Confederacy, this volume also encompasses southern outposts in midwestern and middle-Atlantic border states, even the southern pockets of Chicago, Detroit, and Bakersfield. To foster a deeper understanding of the South's cultural patterns, the editors have organized this reference book around twenty-four thematic sections, including history, religion, folklore, language, art and architecture, recreation, politics, the mythic South, urbanization, literature, music, violence, law, and media. The life experiences of southerners are discussed in sections on black life, ethnic life, and women's life. Throughout, the broad goal is to identify the forces that have supported either the reality or the illusion of the southern way of life -- people, places, ideas, institutions, events, symbols, rituals, and values. The "Encyclopedia of Southern Culture" was developed by the Center for the Study of Southern Culture at the University of Mississippi. Contributors to the volume include historians, literary critics, sociologists, anthropologists, geographers, linguists, theologians, folklorists, architects, ecologists, lawyers, university presidents, newspaper reporters, magazine writers, and novelists.
