TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigate the students' critical thinking skill by using STEM education through Project Based Learning and find that the mean score of students` critical thinking skills was 2.82.
Abstract: This research is to investigate the students` critical thinking skill by using STEM education through Project Based Learning. The study applied descriptive research design. In these lessons, the participants were 160 first grade Japanese middle school students from four classes. They were divided into nine groups each class. The instruments are worksheets to explore students' initial knowledge about how to clean up wastewater and critical thinking processes. The worksheet consists of the designing solution, and understanding of concepts to identify critical thinking based on purpose and question, selection of information, assumption, and point of view the solution, and implication. Students were asked to design tools to clean up the wastewater. Students were given more than one chance to design the best product for wastewater treatment. The lessons consist of six lessons. The first lesson is the introduction of colloid, solution, and suspension, and discussion about wastewater. The second lesson to the fourth lesson was finding solutions and designing products. The fifth lesson was to watch a video of wastewater treatments in Japan and to optimize the solutions or products. The last lesson was to make a conclusion, to exchange presentations, and to develop discussion. Implementation of STEM education can be seen from the students` solutions, some students used biology or chemistry or physics or combination concept and Mathematics to design solution (technology) for treatment of wastewater. The result showed that the mean score of students` critical thinking skill was 2.82. The students` critical thinking skill was categorized as advanced thinker: 41.6%, practicing thinker: 30,6%, beginning thinker: 25%, and challenged thinker: 2.8%. And the category for students` critical thinking was practicing thinker. Practicing thinker is a stage of critical thinking development, they have enough skill in thinking to critique their own plan for systematic practice, and to construct a realistic critique of their powers of thought to solve the contextual problem.

TL;DR: In this article, the effect of project-based learning and problem based learning on student's creativity and critical thinking was investigated in a quasi-experiment using non-equivalent control-group design.
Abstract: The study aims at finding (1) the effect of project-based learning and problem-based learning on student’s creativity and critical thinking and (2) the difference effect of project-based learning and problem-based learning on student’s creativity and critical thinking. This study is quasi experiment using non-equivalent control-group design. Research population of this study was all classes in eleventh grade of mathematics and natural science program of SMA N 1 Temanggung. The participants were 102 students. This study used three classes as research sample which implemented three different kinds of learning models in respiratory system. XI MIPA 3 was as an experimental group implementing project- based learning and XI MIPA 5 was as an experimental group implementing problem- based learning, while XI MIPA 1 was as control group. Data was collected using two instruments to measure student’s creativity and student’s critical thinking. Data was analysed using t- test, multivariate analysis, and univariate analysis. The results reveal that (1) project-based learning and problem-based learning affect student’s creativity and critical thinking; (2) there is a difference effect of project-based learning and problem- based learning on student’s creativity; and (3) there is no difference effect of project-based learning and problem-based learning on student’s critical thinking.

TL;DR: The results show that the developed local wisdom-based natural science module is suitable to improve the ability of students' science literacy either theoretically or empirically.
Abstract: The vulnerability of communities in facing volcano disaster is one of the indicators of the low literacy of science. The low knowledge about volcanic material causes it needs to be packed in an attractive learning so that it can tap into the ability of students’ science literacy by using teaching materials that are closer to student learning environments. This research aims to develop the local wisdom-based natural science module on the theme of Mount Kelud eruption, which is both theoretical and empirical. The type of this research development is Research and Development (R & D) by adapting the ASSURE instructional design. The results of this research are the validation results of theoretical feasibility of teaching materials based on the components of material feasibility of 87, 5% with very good category, components of presentation feasibility of 91, 7% with very good category, components of language feasibility of 88, 9% with very good category, components of local wisdom values of 87, 5% with very good category, and components of science literacy feasibility of 88, 9% with 88, 9% with very good category. The results of empirical feasibility are the test results of students’ science literacy with N-gain variation value of 0,2; 0,3; and 0,4 respectively with low, medium, and medium category. The results show that the developed local wisdom-based natural science module is suitable to improve the ability of students’ science literacy either theoretically or empirically.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors developed a lesson plan in growth material to characterize a scientific learning, character building and concervation effort, as well as explaining the effect of this approach on learning outcomes.
The implementation of 2013 curriculum highly recommends scientific approach in which learning is centered to student. The research aims to develop a lesson plan in growth material to characterize a scientific learning, character building and concervation effort, as well as explaining the effect of this approach on learning outcomes. The design of research used pre-experimental design with one-shotcase study and the technique of collecting data used observation and written tests. This research resulted the lesson plan based scientific approaches and character building. The application of this approach gave positive influence to cognitive, affective and psychomotor and it had already achieved the classical mastery.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe the application of problem-based learning in developing critical thinking skills of PGSD FKIP UMK Kudus students on Science Learning courses.
This research aims to describe the application of problem based learning in developing critical thinking skills of PGSD FKIP UMK Kudus students on Science Learning courses. One of the advantages of problem-based learning model that is able to train students in using a variety of concepts, principles and skills they have learned to solve the problems being faced. With the implementation of problem-based learning, critical thinking skills can develop, because the critical thinking skills were observed in this study is the ability to identify, analyze, solve problems, think logically and make the right decisions and to make conclusions.
