Abstract: In this article Chachage Seithy L Chachage shows that the legal framework and attitude towards private investments in Tanzania over the years has been favourable “It is obvious,” he argues “that the World Bank's thesis that mining in Africa was hampered by controls and inappropriate policies is based on false premises It rests at the very least on confusion between mining in general and mining by very large scale foreign private companies” The article was prepared for a research proposal review workshop on structural adjustment and social change in Africa, held in Lesotho November 1992 as a part of the Scandinavian Institute of African Studies Research Programme ‘The Political and Social Context of Structural Adjustment in Sub-Saharan Africa’

Abstract: Namibia is highly dependent on a narrow, mining-dominated export base. When the country became independent in 1990 it was faced with the diffucult task of turning the economy toward a positive growth. This article analysis the link between an unstable international commodity market and the Namibian economy.

Abstract: In 1976 Rio Tinto Zinc began production in the Rossing uranium mine of Namibia. In 1992 the critical “Past Exposure” report was published including an analysis of radiation and other hazards at Rossing. This report caused a major debate. A mission from the International Atomic Energy Agency visited Namibia and Rossing in 1992. The IAEA-report was published in May 1993. In this article Greg Dropkin of the Namibia Support Committee reviews the IAEA-report.
