Abstract: During the 1980s and 1990s, many developing countries (DCs) have been engaged in far-reaching reforms of their financial systems, liberalising them and making them more market-oriented. This liberalisation, involving inter alia ‘financial de-repression’ has been inspired partly by the work of the McKinnon (1973) and Shaw (1973) [M-S] school. This paper suggests that, in addition to financial de-repression, there has been a major new element in the development of DC financial systems in recent years - the establishment and fast expansion of stockmarkets. These markets have played a key role in the internal as well as external financial liberalisation processes in leading DCs. Further, the paper finds that the actual behaviour of these markets in many countries has led to outcomes which undermine the effects of the higher real interest rates arising from 'financial de-repression'. TL;DR: In this article, a discussion of the characteristics of rural Brazil can be found in the context of the PNADs for 1981 and 1990, and it is shown that rural Brazil is a country with a conjunto of atividades nao-agricolas, such as prestacao de servicos (pessoais, de lazer ou auxiliares), o comercio e a industria, that responde cada vez mais pela nova dinâmica populacional do meio rural brasileiro.
Abstract: O proposito deste texto e chamar a atencao para o que ha de novo no meio rural brasileiro. Procuramos mostrar algumas dessas dimensoes para o Brasil a partir dos dados das PNADs para 1981 e 1990. Concluimos que ja nao se pode caracterizar o meio rural brasileiro somente como agrario. E mais: o comportamento do emprego rural, principalmente dos movimentos da populacao residente nas zonas rurais, nao pode mais ser explicado apenas a partir do calendario agricola e da expansao/retracao das areas e/ou producao agropecuarias. Ha um conjunto de atividades nao-agricolas - tais como a prestacao de servicos (pessoais, de lazer ou auxiliares das atividades economicas), o comercio e a industria - que responde cada vez mais pela nova dinâmica populacional do meio rural brasileiro.

Abstract: Na Amazonia Brasileira a principal atividade responsavel pelo desmatamento e a pecuaria. Esse trabalho analisa a evolucao das causas imediatas do desmatamento da Amazonia, utilizando-se de regressoes lineares com dados em painel. O modelo avalia a contribuicao dos principais usos do solo na regiao ao desmatamento, de 2000 a 2006. Dados do PRODES de desmatamento, o numero de cabecas bovinas de 782 municipios da Amazonia e area plantada de culturas perenes e temporarias foram utilizados para essa analise. O resultado mostrou que o desmatamento e fortemente correlacionado com a pecuaria. A soja tambem aparece positivamente correlacionada com o desmatamento. Esta tendencia e reforcada pelo crescimento nacional e internacional da demanda de carne. Politicas publicas eficazes para a reducao do desmatamento devem, portanto, agir nas causas subjacentes da expansao da pecuaria reduzindo a forca dos processos que produzem a sua expansao na fronteira do desmatamento.

Abstract: The paper concentrates on the role of the stock markets in the liberalisation process in DCs in the 1980s and 1990s, and explores, among other things, their effects on the financing of corporate growth. The observed financing patterns will be seen to contradict the predictions of most economic models, and are therefore surprising not just for the M.S, but also for other economists. At the macro-economic level, the paper considers foreign portfolio f1ows, the interactions between the stock and the currency markets, and their implications for the stability of the real economy and its long-term growth.
