TL;DR: A ferroresonant transformer has a mechanical adjustment in the limiting cross section of the core linking the secondary windings provided by a movable rectilinear segment in the leg on which the secondary is wound.
Abstract: A ferroresonant transformer having a mechanical adjustment in the limiting cross section of the core linking the secondary windings provided by a movable rectilinear segment in the leg on which the secondary is wound, with the longitudinal axes of movement of the segment being canted with respect to the axes of the leg so as to constitute an offset portion of the leg presenting a decreasing limiting cross section as the segment is withdrawn along its axis.

TL;DR: Reviewing the book, Artificial Intelligence Through Simulated Evolution by Lawrence J. Fogel, Alvin J. Owens, and Michael J. Walsh, which argues that strong artificial intelligence (machine intelligence that equals or surpasses human intelligence) by around 2030 and Ray Kurzweil believes that it will be around 2030.
Abstract: Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1968, Vol 13(3), 113–116. Reviews the book, Artificial Intelligence Through Simulated Evolution by Lawrence J. Fogel, Alvin J. Owens, and Michael J. Walsh (see record 1966-12317-000). The authors begin with a statement only a mathematician could love: “For the sake of simplicity, and without sacrificing generality, the environment will be viewed as a sequential source of symbols taken from a finite alphabet.” This is tantamount to suggesting that the entire Library of Congress (including the photographs and diagrams) be recoded as a long, binary number in order to make it easier to deal with. One of the dawning realizations from work in artificial intelligence is that an intelligent device must be able to structure its problems if it is to solve them. Homogenizing the environment makes more severe the already enormous task for the organism.
