Foraging Behavior of Odontomachus bauri on Barro Colorado Island, Panama

Abstract: Foraging behavior and partitioning of foraging areas of Odonomachus bauri were investigated on Barro Colorado Island in Panama. The activity of the ants did not show any daily pattern; foragers were active day and night. The type of prey captured by O. bauri supports the idea that in higher Odontomachus and Anochetus species, the high speed of mandible closure serves more for generating power than capturing elusive prey. Polydomous nests may enable O. bauri colonies to enlarge their foraging areas.

The Process of Intromission in the Mediterranean Fruit Fly, Ceratitis capitata (Diptera: Tephritidiae)

Abstract: The distiphallus of the male of Ceratitis capitata is folded back 180° onto the basiphallus during the early stages of intromission, and is then unfolded within the female. Repeated folding and unfolding may occur within the female. Two membranous sacs on the distiphallus are capable of rhythmic cycles of inflation and deflation. Inflations of the sac near the base of the distiphallus probably help propel the aedeagus deeper into the female, along with periodic stiffening of the basiphallus; inflation of the larger, distal sac may drive the genital rod (which does not transfer sperm) into the ventral receptacle.

Neither worker, nor queen: an ant caste specialized in the production of unfertilized eggs

Abstract: In addition to a queen and workers, colonies of the ant Crematogaster smithi Creighton from Chiricahua Mountains, Arizona, may contain one or several conspicuous “large workers” whose size, external morphology, and number of ovarioles are intermediate between that of queens on one side and that of workers on the other. According to laboratory observations, “large workers” are specialized for the production of unfertilized eggs, which are mainly eaten by the larvae and the queen but may develop into males in queenless colonies. We describe the morphology and the behavior of “large workers” and discuss their evolutionary significance.

Die Einzelfallstudie als psychoanalytisches Forschungsinstruments

Abstract: Edelman, einer der bedeutendsten heutigen Hirnforscher, charakterisiert eine Fragestellung, die bekanntlich auch fur die Psychotherapieforschung von besonderer Relevanz ist, aber nach dem Angriff von Grawe, Donati & Bernauer (1994) auf differenzierte Einzelfallstudien in der Offentlichkeit erneut diskutiert werden mus. In allen ernsthaften Psychotherapien, allen voran in psychoanalytischen Behandlungen, geht es um das Verstehen eines individuellen Leidens, einer unverwechselbaren Lebenssituation eines einzigartigen Menschen und seiner idiosynkratischen Geschichte. Wie kann eine wissenschaftliche Erforschung der Personlichkeit erweitert werden, ohne die subjektive Einmaligkeit des Individuums aus dem Auge zu verlieren? Diese Fragestellung ist fast so alt wie die Psychoanalyse selbst und pragte die wissenschaftstheoretischen, methodologischen und metatheoretischen Diskurse der letzten Jahrzehnte. Doch auch in der empirischen Psychotherapieforschung hat sich die Erkenntnis durchgesetzt, das in einer ernsthaften empirisch-psychoanalytischen Forschung die „subjektive Einmaligkeit des Individuums“ Berucksichtigung Emden mus. Darauf verweist u. a. Fischer (1994) bezugnehmend auf die von Kachele (1992) vorgeschlagene historische Gliederung der empirischen Psychotherapieforschung. Er unterscheidet a) die ergebnisorientierte Forschung (1930–1970), b) kombinierte Prozes- und Ergebnisstudien (1960–1980) und c) Untersuchungen der Mikrodynamik des Prozesgeschehens (seit 1980). 2 In der 3. Forschungsperiode ruckt die systematische und detaillierte Einzelfallstudie vermehrt in den Fokus der Aufmerksamkeit, verbunden mit einem hermeneutischen Vorgehen (vgl. unten). In einigen Studien, auf die ich exemplarisch noch eingehen werde, werden qualitative und quantitative Methoden zur Erforschung des Einzelfalls kombiniert (vgl. dazu auch Faller & Frommer 1994).

Size-Dependent Nest Site Choice by Cavity-Dwelling Ants

Abstract: Nest site choice by cavity-dwelling ants of north temperate deciduous forests was studied at two sites in the northeastern United States. The two numerically dominant ant species in these communities, Myrmica punctivenris and Leptothorax longispinosus, chose different cavity sizes in experiments employing artificial nest sites. These preferences for different cavity sizes should prove useful for studies involving experimental manipulation of cavity-dwelling ant species.

A new fossil snake-fly species from Baltic amber (Raphidioptera: Inocelliidae)

Abstract: A new species of inocelliid snake-fly, Fibla carpenteri, is described and figured frorn Middle to Upper Eocene Baltic amber The species belongs to the nominate subgenus and is the largest amber snake-fly currently known The aberrant fossil species Inocellia peculiaris is transferred to a new genus, EIectrinocellia, and placed in a new subfamily, the Electrinocelliinae, sister to the remainder of the Inocelliidae

The Origin of Workerless Parasites in Leptothorax (S. Str.) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

Abstract: The evolutionary origin of workerless parasitic ants parasitizing colonies of Leptothorax (s.str.) is investigated using data on morphology, chromosome number, and allozyme phenotype of both social parasites and their hosts. Of the three previously proposed pathways, the evolution of workerless parasites from guest ants or slave-makers is unlikely, at least according to a phenogram obtained by UPGMA clustering of Nei's similarities based on seven enzymes, lntraspecific evolution of the workerless parasites Doronomyrmex goesswaldi, D. kutteri, and D. pacis from their common host, Leptothorax acervorum cannot be excluded with the present data. The workerless parasite L. paraxenus, however, clearly differs from its host, L. cf. canadensis, in morphology and biochemistry, and most probably did not evolve from the latter species. It is proposed to synonymize Doronomyrmex under Leptothorax (s.str.).

Pseudoanaplectinia yumotoi, A New Ovoviviparous Myrmecophilous Cockroach Genus and Species from Sarawak (Blattaria: Blattellidae; Blattellinae)

Abstract: Pseudoanaplectinia yumotoi, a new myrmecophilous cockroach genus and species, is described from Sarawak. Based on the male genital phallomeres, it is placed in the Blattellidae: Blattellinae. The genus is ovoviviparous and probably arose from an anaplectinoid-like ancestor. This is the third case of ovoviviparity arising in the Blattellidae. The cockroach has a symbiotic relationship with an ant Crematogaster sp.

Seed-robbing between ant species intervenes in the myrmecochory of Euphorbia characias (Euphorbiaceae)

Abstract: A case of interference competition in which some ant species (Messor barbarus and Aphaenogaster senilis) rob seeds of Euphorbia characias from other ants (especially Tapinoma nigerrimum) is reported. Seed robbing is here regarded as a possible natural impediment to myrmecochory as it may interfere with the seedling recruitment process of the myrmecochorous plant.

A revision of the neotropical orb-weaving spider genus scoloderus (araneae: araneidae)

Abstract: More than one-fourth of the spiders examined for this revision were collected since the neotropical genus Scoloderus was revised in 1976. Thirteen names have been proposed for what appear to be five valid species (Scoloderus cordatus, S. gibber, S. nigriceps, S. tuberculifer, and S. ackerlyi). These species are distinguished by the presence or absence of abdominal humps on the female, the shape of the median apophysis of the male palpus, and the shape of the scape of the female epigynum. Abdominal coloration and pattern are highly variable and unreliable for identification. One new species, Scoloderus ackerlyi, is described on the basis of a single, unique female from Belize.

Urbuch der psychoanalyse. hundert jahre studien uber hysterie von josef breuer und sigmund freud

Abstract: 1895 veroffentlichten Breuer und Freud gemeinsam die Studien uber Hysterie, die Grubrich-Simitis zufolge als das Urbuch der Psychoanalyse gelten durfen. Die Autorin skizziert zunachst den intellektuellen Kontext der Entstehung des Werkes sowie seine erste Rezeption durch die zeitgenossische Medizin und Sexualwissenschaft. Im Zentrum der Darstellung stehen jene Neuerungen psychologischer Wahrnehmung, welche die Studien mit Recht zu einem genuin psychoanalytischen Buch stempeln: eine bis dahin unbekannte Qualitat des Sehens und Horens, die Veranderung der Arzt-Patient-Beziehung, die Etablierung einer neuen Form der Falldarstellung und die Entwicklung der Vorformen psychoanalytischer Theorie und Technik. Abschliesend erortert die Autorin die wissenschaftliche Beziehung zwischen Freud und Breuer und weist letzterem, dem von den Freudianern so gern Unterschatzten, den ihm gemasen Rang in der Entstehungsgeschichte der Psychoanalyse zu.

Transsexueller Wunsch und zissexuelle Abwehr

Abstract: Der Wunsch transsexueller Patienten, durch hormonelle und chirurgische Eingriffe dem jeweils entgegengesetzten Korpergeschlecht angepast zu werden, konfrontiert Psychoanalyse und Sexualwissenschaft mit Problemen, die nicht nur psychologisch zu begreifen sind. Sigusch spricht von Abwehr nicht nur im technischen, sondern auch im epistemologischen, diskurs- und dispositivanalytischen Sinn. Die allgemeinen Dispositive, die die Wirklichkeit von Geschlecht und Geschlechterdifferenz bestimmen, sind zissexueller Natur. Ihre bis ins Physische hinein durchgesetzte Polaritat ist der geschlechtliche Binarismus. Zissexuelle nennt der Autor, absichtlich verfremdend, jene Menschen, bei denen Korpergeschlecht und Geschlechtsidentitat fraglos und scheinbar natural zusammenfallen. Erst wenn erkannt wird, das die zweite Natur in Wirklichkeit die erste ist, kann jene Enttotalisierung des sog. Transsexualismus einsetzen, um die es Sigusch geht.

[From inside to outside? Blind alleys in the discussion of psychoanalysis and society].

Abstract: The attempt first instituted by Freud to use the instruments of psychoanalysis to improve understanding not only of the individual but also of society as a whole has a long tradition, particularly in Germany. Reviewing the last thirty years of discourse on the range of the applicability of psychoanalysis in this context, the author comes to the conclusion that the fruits of this discussion are negligible. Reiche distinguishes five major lines of discourse to illustrate this failure to establish the relevance of a psychoanalytic approach to illuminating the "out-side" world: the first is one of assimilation and desiccation, reference here being to psychoanalytic culture critique; the second a pathological reaction of collective grieving bound up with the Critical Theory; the third the aggressive rebuffs levelled at psychoanalytic insights by systems theory; the fourth a line of devaluation and usurpation as represented by post-structuralism and deconstructionism. In the fifth and final strand of psychoanalytic application discourse discernible in the theory of communicative action, the author discerns a tentative new rapprochement between sociology and psychoanalysis. The author's final conclusion is that psychoanalysis is suitable for the perspective on the inside world, while the outside world is beyond the scope of psychoanalytic theory.

Freuds Komitee 1912–1914. Ein Beitrag zum Verständnis psychoanalytischer Gruppenbildung

Abstract: Auf der Basis einer erweiterten Quellenlage rekonstruiert der Autor die Voraussetzungen und Umstande, die im Jahre 1912 zur Grundung dessen fuhrte, was in der Freud-Literatur als »Geheimes Komitee« Karriere gemacht hat. Schroters soziologischer Blick erlaubt es, die Mechanismen durchsichtig zu machen, die es Freud in dem schwelenden Konflikt mit Jung ermoglichten, eine »Palastrevolution« zu inszenieren, die dazu fuhrte, das der Inhaber der institutionellen Macht – Jung als Prasident der IPV und als Redakteur des »Jahrbuchs fur psychoanalytische und psychopathologische Forschungen« – von der Wiener Gruppe um Freud entthront wurde und letztere als informelles geheimes Gremium, das fur das Interesse Freuds an der Uberlebensfahigkeit seines Werkes stand, die Macht an sich zog, ohne das Freud selber und direkt »regieren« muste. Zugleich zeigt der Autor, das die Differenzen zwischen Wien und Zurich auch aus den jeweiligen lokalen und historischen Besonderheiten zu verstehen sind : Reprasentierten Freud und Wien ein monarchisches Verstandnis von Macht, in dem diese zwar delegiert, aber nicht abgegeben und geteilt wird, so reprasentierten Jung und Zurich ein burgerlich-liberales Machtverstandnis demokratischer Pragung, welches sich einer alten stadtrepublikanischen Schweizer Tradition verdankt.

[The second Holocaust: life is threatening].

Abstract: According to the author's observations, the "second holocaust" is a phenomenon encountered both in the first and the second generation. This dramatic concept seeks to convey the fact that the devastations of the actual holocaust are re-enacted and unconsciously repeated by the survivors and their children in terms not only of the content of the trauma but also of its style. Referring to a number of potted case histories, the authors describe how inevitable and absolute the shadow of destruction is felt to be by the victims and how the contrive to survive under this shadow. From a therapeutic viewpoint it appears helpful to encounter the onset and the effects of this "second holocaust" by activating the life side of the life-death dichotomy as a counter against the compulsive urge for repetition. Life, through felt itself to be permanently at risk, must be made to function as the motor for the negation of death.

Klaus Grawes Konfession und die psychoanalytische Profession

Abstract: Den 1994 von Grawe et al. publizierten Band »Psychotherapie im Wandel. Von den Konfession zur Profession«, der dem berufspolitischen Streit um Sinn und Effizienz langdauernder und hochfrequenter analytischer Psychotherapien schwere Munition geliefert hat, nimmt der Autor zum Anlas, Grawes Buch und seinen methodischen Ansatz mit anderen (vor allem US-amerikanischen) Untersuchungen zur Psychotherapieforschung zu konfrontieren. Dabei kommt Kachele zu dem Schlus, das die bei Grawe analysierten Studien der psychoanalytischen Behandlungswirklichkeit nicht gerecht werden. Sein Pladoyer gilt mehr naturalistischen Designs, die den Wechsel von kontrollierten Behandlungen in Institutionen zur klinischen Behandlung in niedergelassener Praxis reflektieren. Den Psychoanalytikern halt er vor, die Evaluierung von Langzeit- und Hochfrequenzanalysen versaumt zu haben.

Cannibalistic caterpillars (Utetheisa ornatrix) fail to differentiate between eggs on the basis on kinship

Abstract: Utetheisa ornatrix larvae, in exercising egg cannibalism, do not discriminate between kin and nonkin. Under natural conditions this may not be a handicap, partly because the larvae hatch largely in synchrony and do not immediately upon emergence engage in cannibalism.

Kastrationsangst und oraler Neid im Geschlechterverhältnis. Analytisches Arbeiten mit einer ethnologischen Beobachtung

Abstract: Ethno-psychoanalysis is the study of the unconscious in foreign cultures. It can however also be of use in understanding unconscious elements operative in our own culture. To illustrate the point, the author describes the "Koro" epidemic which occurs periodically on the island of Hainan off the south of coast of China. This epidemic largely affects young unmarried men and the author pinpoints the unconscious conflicts underlying this collective phenomenon. It transpires that the epidemic is in effect a species of rite of passage in which a group of young males make the communal attempt to overcome castration anxieties which are themselves the product of covert gender envy. In the second section, Gerlach reports on his psychoanalytic encounter with a young man in Germany displaying similar symptoms. The profounder dimensions of this condition were only comprehensible to the author on account of his knowledge of "Koro".

Ecology of peltoperla arcuata and tallaperla maria (plecoptera: peltoperlidae) at the fernow experimental forest, tucker county, west virginia

Abstract: We examined the abundance, life history, and production of the stoneflies Peltoperla arcuata and Tallaperla maria (Plecoptera: Peltoperlidae) in four forested headwater streams at the Fernow Experimental Forest, Tucker County, West Virginia. Peltoperla arcuata was most abundant in the smallest watersheds ( 200 hectares (ha), was restricted to sites with a baseflow alkalinity of >2 mg L -I CaCO3, and was the dominant peltoperlid only at sites with an alkalinity >15 mg L-1. We conclude that water chemistry overrides stream size as a determinant of speciesspecific distribution of Fernow peltoperlids. Both taxa had semivoltine life cycles with an 18-month naiadal period following a 6-month egg diapause. Emergence was during May-July for both species. Peltoperla arcuata had about 15 instars; T. maria had about 14 instars. Peltoperlid production was highest (509 mg m-2 y-1) in a 128 ha watershed where only P. arcuata was collected; P. arcuata production was lowest (17 mg m-2 y-l) in a 4th order stream (1536 ha). Tallaperla maria production was highest (271 m-2 y-i) in a 257 ha watershed partially underlain by limestone. Queen size variation in the ponerine ant ponera coarctata (hymenoptera: formicidae)

Abstract: Queens of Ponera coarctata show a pronounced variation in size as measured by ommatidia number and Weber's alitrunk length. Isometric size variation and the normal distribution of size categories indicate that, despite these differences, only one queen morph exists. Queen size varies less within colonies than between colonies, and thus appears to be colony specific. Ovary length apparently varies with queen size. Similar size variations as in queens also occured in males, but not in workers.

Athen und Mykene. Zur Interpretation klassischer und neuerer psychoanalytischer Theorie

Abstract: The relation between zeitgeist and psychoanalytic theory formation can be illustrated with reference to the transition from neurosis to psychosis. The author regards Freud as an oedipal thinker in two respects, first as the psychologist who "discovered" the father complex, and secondly as a scholar in the positivist tradition of the nineteenth century with its claims to be able to distinguish clearly between subject and object, hallucination and perception. The pre-oedipal, narcissistic disturbances described and discussed since the beginning of the First World War allow the conclusion that this period saw the onset of a zeitgeist increasingly prepared to countenance archaic dimensions of the psyche and an intermingling of subject and object. In the author's view, the difficulty of reconciling classical and post-classical psychoanalytic theory lies in the fact that this involves completely re-thinking our ideas on the bourgeois individual and challenging the concepts we have of such things as objectivity, normality, autonomy and individuation.

Psychoanalytische Theorien zur Hypochondrie

Abstract: Hypochondrie, eines der altesten Krankheitsbilder mit bis heute unklarem nosologischen Status, ist ein in der Psychosomatik und Neurosenlehre weitgehend vernachlassigtes Thema. In einer umfassenden Literaturubersicht zeigen die Autoren die psychodynamischen Vorstellungen und theoretischen Entwicklungen zur Hypochondrie auf, beginnend mit den Konzeptionen von Freud, Ferenczi und Levy, uber die kleinianischen und ichpsychologischen Erklarungsansatze, die objektbeziehungstheoretischen und selbstpsychologischen Uberlegungen bis hin zur Reflexion des aktuellen Forschungsstandes. Die Autoren arbeiten die Unterschiede zu anderen korperbezogenen Storungen heraus und weisen auf diagnostische und therapeutische Konsequenzen hin.

Natural History of the Ant Pheidole desertorum Wheeler in a Desert Grassland Habitat

Abstract: Pheidole desertorum colonies are large for the genus; the number of adult workers in established colonies ranges from 2,460–24,814. They are nocturnal during summer and are predators and scavengers on arthropods. Both minor and major workers forage, although foraging by majors appears to occur primarily when food is abundant. Young major workers may function as repletes. The adult major/minor worker ratio varies greatly among colonies; much of that variance appears explained by colony size and marturity of adult colony reproductive broods. Most colonies produce reproductives each year and colony sex ratios are extremely sex-biased. Mating season begins following summer rainfall, Males and gynes fly prior to sunrise; males form aerial swarms which gynes enter. Mating occurs on the ground, then gynes fly awy, presumably o suitable colony founding sites Colony f0udation is normally haplometrotic, although pleometrotic queen associations with workers are found.

Zwischen Idealisierung und Entwertung – Probleme der Perspektiven theoretischer Analysen zu weiblicher Homo- und Heterosexualität

Abstract: Weibliche Homosexualitat ist ein nach wie vor kontrovers diskutiertes Thema. In einem Vergleich von einerseits psychoanalytischen und andererseits soziologisch-feministischen Studien arbeitet die Autorin die jeweiligen theoretischen Sichtweisen von weiblicher Homosexualitat heraus: Feministische Autorinnen neigen zur Idealisierung weiblicher Homosexualitat, PsychoanalytikerInnen hingegen zu ihrer Entwertung und Pathologisierung. Die latenten Botschaften beider Diskurse lassen jedoch Gemeinsamkeiten erkennen und auf einen gemeinsamen Problemhintergrund, den »lesbischen Komplex«, schliesen. Flaake sieht in der erotisch lesbischen Beziehung eine »dritte Chance«, in der in einem gesellschaftlich nicht vorgesehenen Raum nachgeholt wird, was in der fruhen Mutter-Tochter-Beziehung mislang: die Aneignung des weiblichen Korpers.
