TL;DR: This article found that religious believers tend to lack charity in their attitudes toward those who are different from them, and that faith-based communities may not be prepared to be good global neighbors.
Abstract: The concept of loving one's neighbor is a commonality between major world religions. However, recent studies, as well as increases in religiously-motivated global violence, point to the fact that religious believers tend to lack charity in their attitudes toward those who are different from them. In one study, church attendance wasactually shown to decrease tolerance. Doors may be starting to open to faith-based participation in international affairs, but faith-based communities may not yet be prepared to be good global neighbors.

Abstract: A century after Weber's famous essay, The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism, Protestantism has changed dramatically. Today, there is an affinity between Pentecostalism—a movement vibrant in Latin America and Africa—and modern economic development. Analogues to the Protestant ethic can be found in eastern Asia and these may be looked upon as “functional equivalents.” Other examples include Opus Dei in Spain and the Old Believers in Russia. Something like the Protestant ethic is a necessary though not sufficient causal factor if a population is to move successfully from poverty to a reasonably decent standard of living.
