TL;DR: The antioxidant therapy, which is controversial at the moment, represents an associated therapy in endothelial dysfunction from ATS and appears that the individual antioxidant status is influenced by environmental factors as well as by a genetic determinant.
Abstract: Oxidative stress is the result of the imbalance between pro-oxidant and antioxidant factors. The participation of oxidative stress in atherosclerosis (ATS) is reflected by lipid peroxidation which is a process initiated and maintained by oxygen reactive species generated by the aterogenic cells themselves. The endothelial aggression in ATS is accompanied by endothelial dysfunction, which is due to the neutralization of nitric oxide by superoxid anion. The key role in the onset and the development of the ATS lesions belongs to oxidated LDL-cholesterol that influence at different levels and by several mechanisms the ATS process. The neutralization of the toxic effects of free radicals is due to the endo and exogen antioxidant systems. It appears that the individual antioxidant status is influenced by environmental factors as well as by a genetic determinant. The antioxidant therapy, which is controversial at the moment, represents an associated therapy in endothelial dysfunction from ATS.

TL;DR: There is general agreement that ACTH or oral corticosteroids remain the treatment of choice, especially in idiopathic cases, which have a better prognosis, and VPA and benzodiazepines have been shown to be helpful.
Abstract: West syndrome, an epileptic encephalopathy of infancy and early childhood with variable etiology, consist of the triad of infantile spasms, arrest or regress of psychomotor development and specific EEG pattern of hypsarrhythmia. Infantile spasms occur within the first year of life. West syndrome has proved to be resistant to treatment, although VPA and benzodiazepines have been shown to be helpful. Then is general agreement that ACTH or oral corticosteroids remain the treatment of choice, especially in idiopathic cases, which have a better prognosis.

TL;DR: Investigation of the effect of daily consumption of dietary flaxseed on plasma lipid concentrations in mildly hyperlipidemic patients found it significantly improves lipid profile in hyperlipIDemic patients and may favorably modify cardiovascular risk factors.
Abstract: UNLABELLED The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of daily consumption of dietary flaxseed (as a source of linolenic acid, LNA) on plasma lipid concentrations in mildly hyperlipidemic patients METHODS 40 hyperlipidemic patients with plasma total cholesterol greater than 240 mg/dL were distributed in 3 groups: 10 patients who received hypo-lipidic diet (diet group), 10 patients who received hypo-lipidic diet plus statins (diet+HL group), 20 patients who received hypo-lipidic diet plus 20 g ground flax-seeds/day (diet+flax group) Body mass index (BMI), serum total cholesterol (TC), HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C), LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C), triglycerides (TG) and cholesterol/HDL-cholesterol ratio were measured at the beginning and after 60 days of treatment RESULTS Flaxseed supplementation was associated with significant reductions in TC (-172%), LDL-C (-39%), TG (-363%) and TC/HDL-C ratio (-335%) There were no significant differences in absolute change in BMI nor in percentage change in TC, HDL-C, LDL-C, TC/HDL-C ratio between flaxseed and statin groups CONCLUSIONS Dietary flaxseed significantly improves lipid profile in hyperlipidemic patients and may favorably modify cardiovascular risk factors
