TL;DR: In this article, a survey of articles in twelve library journals between 1973 and 1982 showed a steady increase in the percentage written by academic librarians, ranging from 28 to 42 percent.
Abstract: Will current pressure for faculty members to publish in order to achieve promotion and tenure affect authorship patterns in the library literature? A survey of articles in twelve library journals between 1973 and 1982 showed a steady increase in the percentage written by academic librarians. The range here was from 28 to 42 percent. The yearly distribution in each of the journals was documented for academic librarian authors and for the size of the library they represented. The productivity of these authors ranged from one to fourteen articles each. Seventy-eight percent of the librarians published only one article in this sample. The sample size of 357 libraries was divided into five classes ranging from smallest, with holdings of less than 100,000 volumes, to largest, with holdings of one million and more volumes. As might be expected, more authors came from the larger libraries and indications are that academic authors will continue to increase their share of authorship in general library journals.

TL;DR: The Georgia Institute of Technology Library has an extensive collection of serials, with emphasis on engineering, science, management, and architecture periodicals, and the importance of constant collection evaluation is stressed.
Abstract: The Georgia Institute of Technology Library has an extensive collection of serials, with emphasis on engineering, science, management, and architecture periodicals. Escalating costs of journal subscriptions combined with chronically inadequate resources budgets necessitated a careful evaluation of the serials collection in the mid 1970s. The F.W. Faxon Company's library information line was used to store evaluative data about each title, and printouts including these data were used to organize titles for evaluation preparatory to cancellation. The completed evaluation was used as the basis for the cancellation of 202 subscriptions in 1976 and 692 subscriptions in 1979. Subsequently, in 1981, an additional 545 subscriptions were cancelled. Ultimately the budget was brought under control at some cost to the quality and extent of the serials collection. In conclusion, the importance of constant collection evaluation is stressed, interlibrary cooperation is urged, and advance planning for large scale subscrip...

TL;DR: This article pointed out that the prices for foreign publications, particularly periodicals, are often higher for North American readers than for other customers, and that this situation seems unjustifiable in terms of currency exchange rates or on any other ground.
Abstract: Prices for foreign publications, particularly periodicals, are often higher for North American than for other customers. This situation seems unjustifiable in terms of currency exchange rates or on any other ground. There are other developments in publishing practices that give reason for concern. It is disturbing that libraries have not more effectively questioned and resisted practices that impose costly burdens on them.

Abstract: Serials present many problems for both librarians and library patrons. For librarians, problems generally involve the management and control of serial collections. For patrons, the problems stem from efforts to access and use the collection. While some of the problems are the same for both librarians and patrons, some are different. Through analysis of the local situation, librarians can change some policies and procedures in management to reduce user frustrations. The author describes the efforts of the Library at the University of lllinois at Urbana to minimize the problems of librarians and at the same time increase serials accessibility for patrons.

TL;DR: This paper describes an approach to fund distribution for serials acquisitions that has proven less than satisfactory and the primary reason for the current imbalance is the tendency of academic departments to maintain periodical subscriptions at the expense of monographic publications.
Abstract: This paper describes an approach to fund distribution for serials acquisitions that has proven less than satisfactory. A change in collection development policies giving primary responsibility for selection decisions to teaching faculty has resulted in a skewing of the balance in library holdings. The primary reason for the current imbalance is the tendency of academic departments to maintain periodical subscriptions at the expense of monographic publications.

TL;DR: The change to successive entry and AACR2 meant that extensive searching and authority work was needed for each title, and the project staffing was reorganized to meet this need.
Abstract: In July 1980 the University of Houston began a project to convert its older serial titles to machine-readable form and consolidate an old serial record file with the newer Central Serial Record. The change to successive entry and AACR2 meant that extensive searching and authority work were needed for each title, and the project staffing was reorganized to meet this need. This change and the decision to delay analytics until the project's end brought dramatic results. The report concludes with suggestions for conversion planning.

Abstract: The second annual survey of serial resources indicates that growth of serial collections in university libraries is negligible. College libraries attempted to maintain "steady state" collections. Public libraries seemed to fare somewhat better, there were few cancellations. Only the two national institutions, Canada Institute for Scientific and Technical Information and the National Library of Canada, achieved a systematic growth in their serial resources. Both are the largest lenders in the country.

TL;DR: The author examines four recent sets of guidelines for the production of union catalogues of serials and concludes that the necessity for careful planning and the need for adequate funding and staffing for what will otherwise be a waste of resources is a common theme.
Abstract: The author examines four recent sets of guidelines for the production of union catalogues of serials. The common theme throughout all four is the necessity for careful planning and the need of adequate funding and staffing for what will otherwise be a waste of resources. The scope of a union list must be clearly defined. Standards for bibliographical input and holdings statements must be established. The ISSN is increasing in usefulness but has not yet achieved complete control.

Reference is made to related topics in the recent literature. It is shown how application of various cost analyses and economic theory methods make available more meaningful and rational decision-making data.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed guidelines for designing and implementing a forecasting system, and selected forecasting models were tested against a time-series of periodical prices, using the mean average deviation as the factor for comparison.
Abstract: Problems arising from the escalation in subscription costs are discussed in the context of management accountability for the effective use of library resources. An effective forecasting system can improve the quality of decision making throughout the administrative hierarchy, so long as there is a clear understanding of its costs and limitations. Guidelines for designing and implementing a forecasting system are proposed, and selected forecasting models are tested against a time-series of periodical prices, using the mean average deviation as the factor for comparison. The results indicate that a forecasting model based upon the geometric mean provides the best results at the least cost.

Various forces on both national and international levels have played an important role in the transformation of traditional cataloging practices. This paper summarizes the development of the International Serials Data System and the International Standard Bibliographic Description for Serials and their impact on both of the editions of the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules. The CONversion of SERials Project is also examined in depth.

TL;DR: The authors found that the stationary level of the student's familiarity with the subject at hand counteracts these benefits to a far greater degree than most might wish to admit, and initial errors in qualifying limitations placed on the search (such as period of publication, for example) further exacerbate this problem.
Abstract: The proliferation of online searching as well as its relative decline in cost has been both a boon and a bane for undergraduate use of journal literature. Preliminary working bibliographies for brief research papers can be constructed in a shorter period of time allowing more time for the creative, cognitive process which is the reason for the exercise in the first place. Dispersion of citations indicates a higher percent of the relative literature searched. However, the stationary level of the student’s familiarity with the subject at hand counteracts these benefits to a far greater degree than most might wish to admit. Lack of analytic selection from the citations produced by the search as well as initial errors in qualifying limitations placed on the search (such as period of publication, for example) further exacerbate this problem.
