TL;DR: The CORE (Chemistry Online Retrieval Experiment) project as discussed by the authors has been one of the oldest and largest efforts in the field of scientific journal publishing and is now in its fifth and final year.
Abstract: Experimental scholarly electronic journals have existed in a variety of forms for several years. The CORE (Chemistry Online Retrieval Experiment) Project, one of the oldest and largest efforts, is now in its fifth and final year. Cornell University's Mann Library, Bellcore, the American Chemical Society (ACS), Chemical Abstracts Service and OCLC have treated a system which will provide networked access to over half a million pages of machine-readable text and graphics from ACS journals. The objectives of this collaboration have been to study the numerous technical, logistical, economic, and sociological issues which face publishers, libraries, and scholars in the shift from paper to electronic dissemination of scholarly research. The library's focus has been on how to ensure that scholars retain unimpeded physical and intellectual access to journal contents after this transition takes place

TL;DR: If adopted by all components of the information industry, SGML would provide an opportunity to build an integrated information environment in which the catalog would provide a clearly marked path to both traditional and electronic information formats.
Abstract: Standardized General Markup Language (SGML) provides a syntax and a meta-language for defining the logical structure of documents, and conventions for naming the components of documents. The author discusses how widespread adoption of SGML might transform what and how we catalog. If adopted by all components of the information industry, SGML would provide an opportunity to build an integrated information environment in which the catalog would provide a clearly marked path to both traditional and electronic information formats

TL;DR: Besides personnel and technological reconfiguration, new strategic partnerships with other libraries, commercial enterprises, software suppliers, publishers, campus computer centers, and user communities of educators and researchers will position libraries to become the high profile knowledge management centers of the future.
Abstract: If libraries are going to play the information game tomorrow, they must position themselves today and take the necessary steps now to become virtual libraries. To move beyond today's electronic libraries to tomorrow's networked virtual ones, libraries will need to extend well beyond their institutional boundaries. We are witnessing the emergence of a new industry in America: the knowledge industry. It involves communications, computers, software; database developers, publishers, and libraries. Libraries will play a pivotal role in the knowledge industry by developing special information packages and by providing direct access to many different print and non- print formats, bibliographic indexes and abstracts, CD-ROM systems, document delivery, full-text-electronic journals, images, and multimedia products. Libraries will offer customized services that seamlessly bring the world of information to users through the Internet, super networks, and wireless communications. Besides personnel and technological reconfiguration, new strategic partnerships with other libraries, commercial enterprises, software suppliers, publishers, campus computer centers, and user communities of educators and researchers will position libraries to become the high profile knowledge management centers of the future. Descriptions of a virtual medical library illustrate progress some libraries have made in these new directions

TL;DR: In this article, the authors consider the building blocks of scholarly communication, and suggest ways for resolving those conflicts, as a preparation for the sessions to follow, and attempt to describe the conditions of our dilemma.
Abstract: When one considers the building blocks of scholarly communication, it is possible to see historical trends forcing them apart into relatively specialized and isolated roles. Today, the entities that are most concerned with professional support of scholarly communication are academic institutions, professional associations, scholarly publishers, and libraries. Each of these faces disconcerting change: in their markets, in their mission, in their revenue streams, in their operational strategies, and in the technology they use to facilitate their work. Simultaneously, the concept of information management is used to reinvent the role of librarians. As a result, knowledgeworkers in these fields face instability on practical levels, and ambiguity on philosophic levels. The opening address will attempt to describe the conditions of our dilemma and suggest ways for resolving those conflicts, as a preparation for the sessions to follow

TL;DR: A new bibliographic structure is proposed for use in today's online library catalogs consisting almost entirely of indexed access points and it is expected that these analytical cross-references will improve serials cataloging by providing author and title access to distinctive volumes of monographic series.
Abstract: A new bibliographic structure is proposed for use in today's online library catalogs. the structure is a MARC bibliographic record consisting almost entirely of indexed access points-in essence, many cross-references assembled into one record, all pointing to a serial. It is expected that these analytical cross-references will improve serials cataloging by providing author and title access to distinctive volumes of monographic series that have been cataloged as serials.

TL;DR: This paper explains the workshop process and what participants think about the personalization of information through modularization or «chunking,» and the use of encryption-based metering technology to control and charge for information access and use.
Abstract: For three and a half years, Mr. Weber's firm has been facilitating two-day, highly interactive public workshops on Mapping the Future of Publishing and the information industries. In the past year or so, several new issues and themes have emerged that concern both publishers and users of information, including the personalization of information through modularization or «chunking,» and the use of encryption-based metering technology to control and charge for information access and use. Publishers also face critical strategic business issues in migrating from print to electronic publications. This paper explains the workshop process and what participants think about these important issues

TL;DR: Trinity University Library has developed a method to store cataloging and processing information in the online series authority record, which helps streamline the handling of tides in series.
Abstract: As libraries automate, paper files such as the card catalog, the shelflist, the order file, and authority files are also automated. To exploit the automated authority file and to help streamline the handling of tides in series, Trinity University Library has developed a method to store cataloging and processing information in the online series authority record. The issue of how to integrate the pure tide authority function of the series authority record with the pragmatic aspects of processing titles in series is discussed. As a result of this integration at Trinity University, acquisitions staff, catalogers, and copy catalogers can easily obtain information about distribution and cataloging treatment of tides within series and analyzed serial titles. This procedure is adaptable to manual environments as well

TL;DR: MOSAIC can be used as an interface for many kinds of Internet information accesses, but it is particularly useful with WWW, because it simplifies access to non-text forms such as images, movies, sound, etc.
Abstract: The World Wide Web (WWW) is an Internet access protocol. Along with the new user interface developed last year by the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) called Mosaic, the Web provides its creator the ability to present formation in an attractive formal. Even better, it enables links within documents and between documents, files, sound and graphical (i.e., multi-media) formats. Items can be read linearly or the reader can move in a hyper-text/media manner among formation. MOSAIC can be used as an interface for many kinds of Internet information accesses, but it is particularly useful with WWW, because it simplifies access to non-text forms such as images, movies, sound, etc. Mosaic is able to interpret the type of media being requested and to transparently open the tools the user needs

TL;DR: In Finland an integrated network called LINNEA (Library Information Network for Academic Libraries) has been set up to facilitate the automation of academic libraries, with headquarters at the Helsinki University Library, to become an open national bibliographic resource.
Abstract: In Finland an integrated network called LINNEA (Library Information Network for Academic Libraries) has been set up to facilitate the automation of academic libraries. The goal of the LINNEA network, with headquarters at the Helsinki University Library, is to become an open national bibliographic resource. The Finnish union library catalogue, called LINDA, was established in 1993. It is based on the catalogues of twenty university libraries, the national bibliographic database Fennica, and Finuc-S (the Finnish Union Catalogue-Serials). At the moment, the LINDA database includes some two million records for monographs and serials. The host of the database is the Helsinki University Library, which is officially the National Library of Finland with a vast range of responsibilities. One of them is the standard numbering of Finnish publications. The 1994 ISSN meeting with the Nordic countries was held in Finland in order to discuss common problems.

TL;DR: This paper discusses the development of this new working model and speculates about the impact of future technological advances, the effect on how researchers and physicians work, and possible applicability to other research disciplines.
Abstract: Since the mid-1970s, DNA and protein sequence data has led to remarkable discoveries that are revealing the fundamental causes of cancer and genetic disease By the year 2005, the Human Genome Project will produce a complete blueprint of human biology Scientists and physicians access these data in GenBank®, a NIH database developed, maintained and distributed by the NCBI These sequences are linked directly to molecular structure databases and to the biomedical journal literature through bibliographic databases like MEDLINE® This new knowledge management system functions with the use of e-mail, CD-ROM products, and Internet client-server applications, and blends the world of print publishing with primary source data residing in globally accessible databanks Current systems require that human beings initiate specific search, analysis, and retrieval requests However, software robots already maintain and update these data, and «intelligent agents» will soon be available for the automated and targeted dissemination of new research findings This paper discusses the development of this new working model and speculates about the impact of future technological advances, the effect on how researchers and physicians work, and possible applicability to other research disciplines
