TL;DR: Termite damage to property, especially buildings, has recently aroused private and official concern due to the expansion in housing schemes, the increasing use of wood as a building material, the continuing rise in wood prices, and rising cost of labor.
Abstract: Termite damage to wood is widespread. As a tropical country the Sudan must always have experienced their presence. However, their damage to property, especially buildings has recently aroused private and official concern. This is due to the expansion in housing schemes, the increasing use of wood (imported and locally grown) as a building material, the continuing rise in wood prices, and rising cost of labor. About 40 termite species have been identified from collections in the Sudan. Of these, over 30 species are wood eaters and some 18 species are to be found in the arid part of the country.
