TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explore the nature of sport's presumed contribution, in particular the contribution of sports clubs to the development of types of capital, especially social capital, and conclude that it is not clear what contribution sports clubs can play in this agenda, and that more research is required to explore the processes of social capital formation in sports clubs.
Abstract: Recent political and policy concerns with social inclusion, civic renewal and ‘joined up’ government have placed debates about social capital at the centre of a number of areas of social policy. In this context increasing demands are being made of sport to contribute to this broader social regeneration agenda. This essay explores the nature of sport's presumed contribution, in particular the contribution of sports clubs to the development of types of capital, especially social capital. It concludes that it is not clear what contribution sports clubs can play in this agenda, that the new policy agenda carries dangers of undermining the nature and strengths of the voluntary sector in sport and that more research is required to explore the processes of social capital formation in sports clubs.

TL;DR: In this paper, sport events are used with increasing frequency to build the brand of their host destinations and sport events can take different roles relative to the destination brand: as co-branding partners with destination brand, as extensions of the destination brands, or as features of destination brand.
Abstract: Sport events are being used with increasing frequency to build the brand of their host destinations. Events can take different roles relative to the destination brand: as co-branding partners with the destination brand, as extensions of the destination brand, or as features of the destination brand. Which role is appropriate depends on the nature of the event's brand. Since each role presents different opportunities, risks and requirements, events must be incorporated strategically into the destination's marketing plan. Strategic incorporation of sport events into destination branding requires that each event be cross-leveraged with others in the destination's event portfolio, as well as with the destination's other sport activities and attractions.

TL;DR: The concept of serious sport tourism as mentioned in this paper is used to describe leisure activities that are "sufficiently substantial and interesting in nature for the participant to find a career there acquiring and expressing a combination of its special skills, knowledge, and experience".
Abstract: ‘Serious leisure’ is a concept used to describe leisure activities that are ‘sufficiently substantial and interesting in nature for the participant to find a career there acquiring and expressing a combination of its special skills, knowledge, and experience’ [1]. Serious leisure participants are often highly identified with the subculture of their chosen activity. Consequently, sport tourism can provide serious leisure participants with (1) a way to construct and/or confirm one's leisure identity, (2) a time and place to interact with others sharing the ethos of the activity, (3) a time and place to parade and celebrate a valued social identity, (4) a way to further one's leisure ‘career’, and (5) a way to signal one's career stage. By understanding the nexus of serious leisure, social identity and subculture, we are better able to describe and explain participation in what we term ‘serious sport tourism’.
