Abstract: At first this paper will appear to be the history of an idea the idea ot marxism as a revolutionary theory. I distinguish various stages in tht understanding of marxism. They are, in the chronological order of their appearance: &dquo;skeletal marxism&dquo;, &dquo;anatomical marxism&dquo; and &dquo;physiological marxism&dquo;. There is also a completely disembodied or unreal variety hovering around. This is &dquo;spectral marxism&dquo;. Like all ghosts it provides room for endless speculation about its nature, since it does not ~xist except in the minds of the men who invent it. It is not, however, the history of marxism as a revolutionary theory which is important but its archaeology, and just what is meant by that word will, I hope,
