Abstract: For an anniversary volume in honor of Karl Bonhoeffer's eightieth birthday I contributed a paper on „The Upright Posture/' That was in 1948. Sincethen I have not let go of the topic, and it has not let go of me. Subsequently, I have looked around in literature and scientific writings for critical remarks, and even more for expressions of agreement. To Richard Jung in Freiburg I owe a reference from Herder's Ideas on the Philosophy of Human History where he says, „Man is the first freedman of creation ; he stands upright/' C. von Lorck gave me a quotation from Ovid's Metamorphoses :
