Ethiek: modern en postmodern

Abstract: In dit jaar van herdenking is mij gevraagd enkele beschouwingen te wijden aan de ontwikkeling van de ethiek gedurende de laatste honderd jaar. Terugblikkend ga ik uit van een artikel uit de Revue neo-scolastique van I9OO, waarin Mercier iets dergelijks doet als van mij vandaag wordt verlangd. Hij maakt er een filosofiseli bilan op van de 19de eeuw. En de eerste rich ting die hij op de korrel neemt is, typisch genoeg, het traditionalisme van L. de Bonald. Dit beleeft 20 sterk de onmacht van de rede, zegt Mercier, dat het zieh in de armen werpt van het geloof . Maar, , , een geloofsact kan niet de primordiale act van de menselijke rede zijn. De mens zou niet kunnen geloven als hij niet eerst zou inzien dat het redelijk was te geloven ' ' l . De bedoeling van filosofie is en blijft voor Mercier wetenschap te zijn, wat voor hem betekent, inzicht verwerven in de werkelijkheid. Sommigen, en er wordt een mij onbekende Torau-Bayle geciteerd, menen dat filosofie geen wetenschap is, dat ze precies daar iets tracht te zeggen waar de wetenschap verstek laat gaan, maar dan op de wijze van de verbeelding, het geloof of de droom. Maar wie dat zegt, aldus Mercier, ondersteunt eigenlijk het positivistische vooroordeel van Comte, dat alleen de waarneming van het positieve feit grondslag is van wetenschap 2.
