TL;DR: Three of the species of ascidian described from the Vema Seamount are described as new: Synoicum atlanticum, Aplidium vemense, and Pseudodistoma michaelseni.
Abstract: Summary A collection of thirteen species of ascidian is described, from the Vema Seamount, four of which are only identified to the genus. Three of the species are described as new: Synoicum atlanticum, Aplidium vemense, and Pseudodistoma michaelseni. The affinities of the ascidian fauna are mainly with those of South Africa.

TL;DR: The Natal benthic Pelecypod fauna contains a higher proportion of endemic species and a lower proportion of tropical species than the Mocambique fauna as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: SUMMARY Dredge and grab samples of the benthic fauna off Natal and Mocambique were obtained for the University of Cape Town ecological survey during the International Indian Ocean Expedition. 52 Species of Pelecypoda are reported as a result of this and some previous sampling off the Natal coast. Three new species of Pelecypoda are described in Boshoff (1968). From a brief analysis of the distribution records of only the reported species around southern Africa, it appears that the Natal benthic Pelecypod fauna is fairly distinct from that of the South African south coast. The Natal fauna contains a higher proportion of endemic species and a lower proportion of tropical species than the Mocambique fauna. None of the Mocambique Pelecypoda and only 7% of the Natal Pelecypoda extend to the West Coast of South Africa.

TL;DR: A new subspecies of the salp, Thalia democratica (Forskal, 1775) is described and the oriental variety and the typical form of T. democratica are elevated to subspecific rank.
Abstract: SUMMARY A new subspecies of the salp, Thalia democratica (Forskal, 1775) is described and a revised description of Thalia democratica var. orientalis Tokioka, 1937 is given. In addition, the oriental variety and the typical form of T. democratica are elevated to subspecific rank.

TL;DR: The division into three subspecies of the salp, Thalia democratica, on the basis of numerical taxo-nomical studies is described here for the first time.
Abstract: SUMMARY The division into three subspecies of the salp, Thalia democratica, on the basis of numerical taxo-nomical studies is described here for the first time. The studies were carried out on both solitary and aggregate zooids. The coefficient used to process the data was Jaccard's coefficient (1908).

TL;DR: Three new species of benthic bivalve shell specimens are described conchologically with indications of the place of origin of each shell, one of which is a new genus among the shells of Africa.
Abstract: SUMMARY Three new species of benthic bivalve shell specimens,—i.e. Nucella fragilis, Leda lanceta, and Periploma fractura are described conchologically with indications of the place of origin of each shell. The last-mentioned is a new genus among the shells of Africa. Measurements, photos and diagrams accompany the description of each shell specimen, which at the same time is also named here.

TL;DR: A comparison is made between plankton net catches from the modified Discovery pattern N70 and the Indian Ocean standard net and there was a significant difference in the estimation of standing crop by the two nets.
Abstract: Summary A comparison is made between plankton net catches from the modified Discovery pattern N70 and the Indian Ocean standard net. There was a significant difference in the estimation of standing crop by the two nets. A conversion factor is given. A modification of the Indian Ocean standard net incorporating a depth-flowmeter is described.

TL;DR: The pelvic region of the pelvic region in a hybrid between Paracheilognathus rhombeus and Rhodeus ocellatus representing a case of duplicitas media asymmetrica and severe lordosis and scoliosis is found.
Abstract: Summary This paper deals with uncommon abnormalities found in the following fishes. Duplication of dorsal fin in a hybrid between Paracheilognathus rhombeus ♀ and Acheilognathus limbatus ♂ representing a case of duplicitas media asymmetrica. Metastasis of the pelvic region in a hybrid between P. rhombeus ♀ and Rhodeus ocellatus ♂. Severe lordosis and scoliosis in a hybrid between P. rhombeus ♀ and R. ocellatus ♂. Congenital rudimentation of dorsal fin in a hybrid between P. rhombeus ♀ and R. ocellatus ♂. Absence of pelvic fin in a hybrid between P. rhombeus ♀ and R. ocellatus ♂. Absence of pelvic girdle and fins in an adult specimen of R. ocellatus. Incomplete triplication of caudal fin in a hybrid between P. rhombeus ♀ and R. ocellatus ♂.

TL;DR: A taxonomical analysis of the hybrids between Paracheilognathus tabira from Japan and Rhodeus sericeus amarus from Europe found that both kinds of hybrid were intermediate with a tendency toward R. s.
Abstract: Summary The results of a taxonomical analysis of the hybrids between Paracheilognathus tabira from Japan and Rhodeus sericeus amarus from Europe are presented. In their general appearance, both kinds of hybrid were intermediate with a tendency toward R. s. amarus. This tendency was stronger in the hybrid between R. s. amarus ♀ and P. tabira ♂ than in the reciproce. Some aspects of the dominating influence of R. s. amarus in the hybrids are discussed.
