TL;DR: The need for subject access on OPACs has been widely recognised since their early development in the USA and most OPAC systems provide help screens to assist users in their searches.
Abstract: The need for subject access on OPACs has been widely recognised since their early development in the USA (Markey, 1984; Matthews, 1985b). Many OPACs in UK academic libraries provide subject access to catalogue records, mostly through search strategics such as keyword access or subject headings searches. However, users do find subject searching more difficult than known‐item searching (Markey, 1985; Bagnall and Jeffreys, 1986) so most OPAC systems provide help screens to assist users in their searches.

TL;DR: Though the Call for Proposals for projects under the libraries programme has only just been launched, the Commission of the European Communities has for the past three years been supporting a number of projects which provide essential preparatory work and support for eventual projects Under the programme.
Abstract: Though the Call for Proposals for projects under the libraries programme has only just been launched (July, 1991), the Commission of the European Communities (CEC) has for the past three years been supporting a number of projects which provide essential preparatory work and support for eventual projects under the programme. There is a popular myth that CEC actions are shrouded, if not in secrecy, then in an impenetrable fog of bureaucracy. However, for all work funded or supported by the CEC, dissemination is regarded as a high priority. Indeed, all projects have a contractual obligation to disseminate information about their projects and their results as widely as possible.

TL;DR: This paper describes one user's experience of migrating its library management system to a UNIX platform, and integrating it into a campus‐wide network.
Abstract: The October 1990 issue of Vine contained articles on the development of the UNIX operating system and the marketplace for integrated library systems capable of running under UNIX. This paper describes one user's experience of migrating its library management system to a UNIX platform, and integrating it into a campus‐wide network.

TL;DR: In this paper, the European Commission has accepted a proposal for an Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) pilot/demonstration project between library networks in Europe for interlending services.
Abstract: The European Commission has accepted a proposal for an Open Systems Inter‐Connection (OSI) pilot/demonstration project between library networks in Europe for interlending services. The project arose from the Commission's call for ‘declaration of interest’ in pilot or demonstration projects designed to promote competitiveness and develop the information service market in Europe. It predates the ‘Plan of Action for Libraries in the European Community’, but subscribes to the objectives and action lines included in it.

TL;DR: An “integrated” library system that has been purpose‐built for Lancaster University Library, and used the Pick Operating System, and automated its systems, starting with Acquisitions and moving to Cataloguing, OPAC, and so on.
Abstract: Downsizing is the concept of utilising low cost equipment (often IBM PCs or compatibles) for applications that previously required relatively large and expensive computers. At Lancaster University Library, we have, over the last few years, developed an “integrated” library system that has been purpose‐built for our requirements. We have used the Pick Operating System, and automated our systems, starting with Acquisitions and moving to Cataloguing, OPAC, and so on. Along the way, we have included inter‐library loans, slides, serials and other associated systems.
