TL;DR: In this paper, a self-reflexive or auto-ethnomethodological analysis of a transcribed commentary and video footage, produced by a runner wearing a chest-mounted camera, is presented.
Abstract: This article is concerned with the organisation of visual order, and seeing and perception in embodied activity. More specifically, it describes how perception gets done in the work of running through a city centre. The article centers upon a ‘self-reflexive’ or ‘auto-ethnomethodological’ analysis of a transcribed commentary and video footage, produced by a runner (the author) wearing a chest-mounted camera. The article critically revisits two articles published in this journal – the first, an ethnomethodological treatment of visually available order during a walk to the supermarket (Hester and Francis, 2003); the second an ‘auto-ethnographic’ treatment of distance runner’s vision (Hockey and Collinson, 2006). In returning to these two articles, this article is especially concerned with the categorisational grounds and sequential organisation of (visual) perception and with the ways in which ‘observing’ and ‘describing’ are done in ways relevant for and tied to the contingencies of a given task. That is to say that, that which is available as seeable is a continual, local, and practical accomplishment not of a generic, detached, ‘observer’ but as realised in and through specific activities; ‘perception-in-action’. In this sense, the article aims to further the contribution of those previous articles by paying a closer attention to the doing of perception whilst running.

TL;DR: Schreiber as discussed by the authors showed that participants in many of the earlier projects made visible the effects of US border policy and policing, and produced "migrant counterconducts" that set out to challenge their exclusion, yet all too often the organisers "foreground a 'national gaze' augmented by a 'nativist point of view'".
Abstract: Schreiber demonstrates that participants in many of the earlier projects made visible the effects of US border policy and policing, and produced ‘migrant counterconducts’ that set out to challenge their exclusion (36) yet all too often the organisers ‘foreground a ‘national gaze’, augmented by a ‘nativist point of view’ (157). This study illuminates the many ways in which undocumented migrants from Mexico and Central America have creatively devised strategies to challenge the ways in which they are represented, evidence their experiences, motivate others, and make visible crimes committed by the US state. By revising existing documentary forms, and utilising new modes of dissemination, they ‘disrupt the ways in which migrant “illegality” is produced by making visible the effects of border militarization and policing ... on undocumented migrants’ (157).

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: Art from Elsewhere as discussed by the authors is a case study of contemporary art acquisitions in regional permanent collections which were funded by a £5 million pound grant from the UK charitable organisation, Art Fund.
Abstract: This study posits that current cultural diplomacy practice in UK museums and galleries could be significantly improved. Indeed, cultural diplomacy is commonly viewed as nationalist propaganda. An attempt to theoretically debunk this proposition indicates that greater understanding between peoples can be engendered by unifying the ideologies of internationalism and liberalism in the cultural sector. Liberalism is viewed as the present ideology operating in Museums and Galleries whilst internationalism is considered as a nascent force. Working in symbiosis, liberalism allows for a multiplicity of discourse whilst internationalism allows for a critical reappraisal of the status quo and nation-state hegemony. Indeed, a multiplicity of dialogic discourse is essential for cultural institutions to maintain a non-hegemonic stance. This is, of course, particularly apparent in contemporary art work which can often be subversive of national governments and the very idea of a nation-state. Further to this, a form of localised cultural diplomacy can reach the public at large and question the cultural capital of world centres. Empirically speaking, the exhibition format is used as a means to render cultural diplomacy palatable for public consumption. Hence, the UK case study Art from Elsewhere will be introduced which has rendered the international a normative presence in local art galleries. This 2014–2016 exhibition comprised a tour of recent contemporary art acquisitions in regional permanent collections which were funded by a £5 million pound grant from the UK charitable organisation, Art Fund. Instead of monophonic exhibitions emanating from one nation, Art from Elsewhere engenders a multilateral dialogue catalysed by the polyphonic nature of artists from several different nations whose works are juxtaposed both in conflict, symmetry and contrast to one another.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, Cramer discusses the later work of Peter Watkins and concludes that any attempt to turn utopian thought into reality risks collapsing the entire temporal-historical logic that grants utopian thought its value as both a spur to imagining a better world and a tool for diagnosing the limits of what can be imagined in the present.
Abstract: This seeming contradiction at the heart of the project comes to a head when Cramer discusses the later work of Peter Watkins. In contrast to earlier films Watkins made for BBC TV in the 1960s, the author is much more critical of the director’s later works such as the critically acclaimed La Commune (2000), in which Watkins reconstructed the 1871 Paris Commune with the help of over 200 French citizens from all walks of contemporary life. For Cramer, this project failed precisely because it was an attempt to actualise utopia in the current moment. This leads him to a rather extraordinary conclusion: ‘When utopia becomes present and experienced, it risks collapsing the entire temporal-historical logic that grants utopian thought its value as both a spur to imagining a better world and a tool for diagnosing the limits of what can be imagined in the present’ (p.210). In other words, this is a view that utopia should never actually exist. It should only ever be theoretical and imagined. Anyone attempting to turn utopian thought into reality is simply jeopardising the whole project: Paradise can only ever be Paradise when it is infinitely postponed.

TL;DR: Hatherley argues that the adoption of mass cultural motifs, their Americanitis (Amerikanshchina), was predicated upon a kind of cultural misunderstanding as discussed by the authors, the Soviets assumed the admixture of jazz-age populism and modernism evident in the American mass culture of the era was closer to their own ideas than it was.
Abstract: Chaplin and his films were deeply relevant to those concerned with industrialisation and modernisation – especially to artists clustered in the burgeoning avantgardes in Moscow and Berlin. Though Weimar-era German culture has undoubtedly influenced this book, the real question is how those in the Soviet Union received, understood and redeployed two imports from the USA: Fordist efficiency and Chaplinesque eccentricity. Taken together, Hatherley argues, these two concepts formed an image of America for the Soviets. Of course, mass culture fascinated the Soviet avant-garde, but Hatherley also claims that their adoption of mass cultural motifs, their Americanitis (Amerikanshchina), was predicated upon a kind of cultural misunderstanding. The Soviets assumed the admixture of jazz-age populism and modernism evident in the American mass culture of the era was closer to their own ideas than it in fact was. Overall, these attempts by avantgarde artists to import Americanism into Soviet life were an attempt to give the factory some aspects of the circus and give the circus the discipline of the factory.
