TL;DR: A representative sample of about 1000 70-year-olds in 1971/72 was included in the longitudinal and cross-sectional population study of elderly people in Gothenburg, Sweden, to contribute to the knowledge of normal aging processes and of normal criteria within the age group, and to offer a thorough medical examination.
Abstract: A representative sample of about 1000 70-year-olds in 1971/72 was included in the longitudinal and cross-sectional population study of elderly people in Gothenburg, Sweden (H70). The objectives were to make a survey of the social and medical conditions of this population, to obtain basic data for planning the care of the elderly, to contribute to the knowledge of normal aging processes and of normal criteria within the age group, and to offer a thorough medical examination. The survivors have been examined longitudinally at ages 70, 75, 79, 81, 82, 83, 85, 88, and 90 years of age. As possible cohort effects during 5-year-periods are also an object of interest, a further two cohorts have been examined at age 70, 75, and 79, and 70, 72, and 76, respectively. Another 75-year-old cohort has also been included (the Nordic comparative study of 75-year-olds-NK75). Using mainly identical methods, but different additional examinations, three Nordic countries cooperated in a comparative study of functional aging within the framework of the gerontological and geriatric population studies during the period October 1990-May 1991. The other centers were the universities of Copenhagen and Jyvaskyla. The study aimed at comparing functional ability and biological aging between elderly in the Nordic countries. On an average, 3000 to 4000 variables about aging and diseases in old age are being collected per subject.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

TL;DR: It can be stated that mitochondrial changes occur more frequently in the skeletal muscle cells than in the lymphocytes.
Abstract: Skeletal muscle cells of young and old humans and CBA/Ca mice were examined electronmicroscopically. The mitochondria in old subjects and mice showed age-related changes. The cristae of mitochondria became irregularly spaced, disrupted and replaced by lamellar, myelin-like structures. Giant mitochondria were often visible. They contain lipofuscin in the myofibrils, too, which was often in close relationship with the damaged mitochondria. Comparing these mitochondrial changes with those demonstrated in the lymphocytes in authors' earlier reports, it can be stated that mitochondrial changes occur more frequently in the skeletal muscle cells than in the lymphocytes.

TL;DR: What do you do to start reading aging and society?
Abstract: What do you do to start reading aging and society? Searching the book that you love to read first or find an interesting book that will make you want to read? Everybody has difference with their reason of reading a book. Actuary, reading habit must be from earlier. Many people may be love to read, but not a book. It's not fault. Someone will be bored to open the thick book with small words to read. In more, this is the real condition. So do happen probably with this aging and society.

TL;DR: In this article the term "lifelong learning" is discussed in detail from a pedagogic perspective as an integral part of "competence" and of mastering different developmental tasks in old age.
Abstract: In this article the term "lifelong learning" is discussed in detail from a pedagogic perspective. Lifelong learning is seen as an integral part of "competence" and of mastering different developmental tasks in old age. Moreover, it is seen as a component of "education". Education comprises not only the acquisition of knowledge, but is understood to develop strategies and competence for coping with tasks and crises. This is illustrated in discussing theoretical models of critical life events and developmental tasks.

TL;DR: Social data relevant for treatment and discharge planning can thus be obtained and patients can be identified, for whom a home visit seems to be useful.
Abstract: To evaluate social aspects of elderly patients which are important for diagnosis and therapy within geriatric assessment, a questionnaire was developed and validated. Raters showed a high degree of agreement on the scale, which contains social contacts and support, activities, economic situation, and housing conditions (0.92-0.97; p < 0.05). Compared to the interrater reliability the test-retest reliability was somewhat lower (0.75), but also significant at the 5% level. The internal consistency showed high values between 0.72-0.89. In order to evaluate the validity of the screening test the answers of the patients were compared with the assessment of the therapeutic team. The team had information from a home visit, patients spouse, relatives, neighbors, community nurses and/or general practitioners. There was a significant relationship (p < 0.01) between therapeutic assessment and the scale (r = 0.51). Sensitivity, specificity, and total efficiency also attained sufficiently high values at a cut-off of 16/17 for the complete scale (max. 25 points). The test is easily and quickly performed; its acceptance is high. Social data relevant for treatment and discharge planning can thus be obtained and patients can be identified, for whom a home visit seems to be useful.
