Prospective teachers’ reasoning and response to a student’s non-traditional strategy when dividing fractions

TL;DR: The authors examined the reasoning and responses of prospective elementary and secondary teachers to a student's non-traditional strategy for dividing fractions and found that those who unpacked the mathematical underpinning of the student's strategy tended to use what they call teacher-focused responses, whereas those doing less analysis work tended to construct "student-focused" responses.

Teaching problem solving as viewed through a theory of models

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a small amount of theory including an analysis of the task of teaching problem solving and the act of problem solving derived from a theory of models of operations.

Using models of operations and equations

TL;DR: In this article, a systematic procedure for analyzing this task of teaching operations with the use of models and developing teaching strategies has been demonstrated, in which the teacher can (a) choose models and a family of equations, (b) choose an analysis of the equations into constituent parts involving family or equation levels, (c) choose a strategy utilizing direct correlates or oblique correlates for connecting the equations and models at a general or instance level.

Towards the Formal Study of Models in the Non-Formal Sciences

Leo Apostel
- 01 Sep 1960 -
TL;DR: In this article, the authors mention some of the main reasons underlying the use of models in scientific research, such as diversity, diversity, and the fact that the same instrument cannot perform all those functions (often the multiplicity of function is recognised but not to a full extent, or not with respect to the difference of structure it implies).
