A Databased Time and Cost Estimation Algorithm for Piece Part Design and Manufacturing

Abstract
To get a closer step for CAD/CAM integration in PC-based workstation, a timecost algorithm is developed to supplement commercially available pathtrace system, utilizing its existing database The part-design-timing routine is just a simple program working together with DOS batch files that mark the starting and stopping times of using pathtrace CAD/CAM system It shows and stores the time a user spent on the computer using the pathtrace software for designing part geometries and planning the machining processes up to the final accomplishment The stored designing time can be used in the cost estimation algorithm Time-cost estimation algorithm determine the specific machining time and production cost for each machining process of part manufacture by retrieving appropriate database files Utility and usefulness of this algorithm demonstrated with practical examples
