Reviews a range of theories, concepts and learning approaches that are relevant to the development of professionals. Goes on to take a look at how professionals actually learn, once they are in practice. The latter is based on empirical research conducted across 20 professions. Reports on the range of experiences and events that practitioners had found particularly formative in helping them become fully competent professionals; this point often not having been reached until long after their formal professional training had ended. An attempt is made to relate the formative experiences reported to particular theoretical approaches to learning. The experiences are classified into a number of general kinds of “learning mechanism” and these are placed within a “taxonomy of informal professional learning methods”. The results of the research should be of use both to professional developers and to individual professionals. They should assist developers in their planning of placements or post‐formal training. They should help individual professionals to maximise their professional learning, by seeking out particular kinds of experience and making the most of those that come their way.

O estudo identifica e analisa como ocorre o processo de intercâmbio entre as praticas informais e formais de aprendizagem no processo de desenvolvimento de competencias junto a participantes de programas de especializacao e mestrado profissional em administracao. Evidenciou-se uma diversidade de modos a partir dos quais os individuos podem adquirir as suas competencias, realcando a importância critica da aprendizagem informal neste processo. Alem da construcao de uma taxonomia de doze formas de aprendizagem que contribuem para o desenvolvimento de competencias gerenciais, o estudo desperta a necessidade de se reconhecer a contribuicao da aprendizagem informal pelas praticas de trabalho na aquisicao de competencias gerenciais, permitindo delinear algumas proposicoes para gestores e profissionais que atuam na area de desenvolvimento e formacao gerencial.

Increasing demand on aviation industry calls for more pilots. Thus, pilot training systems and pilot-candidate screening systems are essential for civil and military flying training institutes. Before actual flight training, it is not easy to determine whether a flight trainee will be successful in the training. Due to the high cost of actual flight training, it would be better if there were low cost methods for screening and training candidates prior to the actual flight training. This study intended to determine if subject related factors and flight control stick position have an impact on acquisition of simulated flying skills using a PCbased flight simulator. The experimental model was a factorial design with repeated measures. Sixty-four subjects participated in the experiment and were divided into 8 groups. Experiment consisted of 8 sessions in which performance data, such as heading, altitude and airspeed were collected every 15 seconds. Collected data were analyzed using SAS statistical program. Result of multivariate analysis of variance indicated that the three independent variables: nationality, computer game experience, and flight stick position have significant impact on acquiring simulated flying skill. For nationality, Americans recorded higher scores in general (mean: 81.7) than Koreans (mean: 78.9). The difference in mean scores between Americans and Koreans was 2.8 percent.
