Abstract
Slow Read DoS attack is a technique of exhausting connection resources by delaying communication after three-way handshake. In this paper, we analyze the effectiveness of Slow Read DoS attack by experiments in virtual network simulating real communication environment. We also propose a Synchronous Slow Read DoS attack method. From the analysis, we found that the communication speed and the Timeout of server affect the effectiveness of attack and we derive the optimal settings for proposed attack method. As the result, we confirmed that our method is more advantageous than previous schemes under the condition of the same total number of attack connections.

Slow-Port-Exhaustion DoS Attack on Virtual Network Using Port Address Translation

TL;DR: This paper presents Slow-port-exhaustion DoS Attack on a virtual network, a new type of DoS attack that exploits some flaws of the TCP protocol that makes other machines on the same virtual network could not connect to the external network.

How Secure are Web Servers? An Empirical Study of Slow HTTP DoS Attacks and Detection

TL;DR: This paper does an empirical study on different HTTP servers for their vulnerability against slow HTTP DoS attacks and proposes a method to detect Slow HTTP Dos attack, an anomaly detection system which measures the Hellinger distance between two probability distributions generated in training and testing phases.

A Defense Method against Distributed Slow HTTP DoS Attack

TL;DR: This paper proposes and evaluates a defense method against Distributed Slow HTTP DoS attack by disconnecting the attack connections selectively by focusing on the number of connections for each IP address and the duration time, and shows that the proposed defense method is effective against DDoS attack.

Analysis of Slow Read DoS Attack and Countermeasures

TL;DR: It is found that the Slow Read DoS Attack by a single attacker can be prevented by adequate security settings of Web server and applying countermeasure such as ModSecurity, but these countermeasures are not effective against distributed Slow Read doS Attack (Slow Read DDoS Attack) which is proposed in this paper.
