The H Barry Collin Research Medal was presented to Professor Anthony J Adams on 13 April at the Australian Vision Convention held on the Gold Coast, Queensland. The award recognises his outstanding career of research in optometry. The lead paper in this issue is the acceptance address he gave on that occasion. It reports an important new aspect of his long-term work on the effect of diabetes on the eye and visual function, much of which has been focussed on early detection. The H Barry Collin Research Medal is awarded by Optometrists Association Australia to recognise Australians or others with an important connection to Australia, who have made a sustained and significant contribution to the advancement of knowledge in optics, vision science or clinical optometry. The award was established in 1977 and named to honour the pioneering research achievements of Professor Barry Collin, who at the time was Reader in Optometry at The University of Melbourne and later Professor of Optometry at the University of New South Wales. He was the first recipient of the award. Professor Adams is the fifth recipient; the second was Professor Brien Holden OAM (1988), the third was Professor Gerald Westheimer FRS (2010) and the most recent was Professor Jack Pettigrew FRS (2011). The award consists of a medal and a substantial cash prize. Professor Anthony J Adams qualified in optometry at The University of Melbourne in 1962.
