Bias in medical information.

A clinical trial designed along classical statistical lines that disregards an aspect of the theory of hypothesis testing, called the power of the test (1-β), may lead to an erroneous decision if a non-significant difference is found. The results may also be misleading if the statistical test is not powerful enough to detect a difference between treatments. A prototype problem of comparing two treatments A and B, in terms of the corresponding 5-year survival rates, is used to illustrate the significance of the concept called the power of the test (1-β).

The present investigation is an attempt to find the extent of statistical error and other deficiencies in the articles published in the Indian Journal of Psychiatry from April 1986 to January 1987. A sample of 26 articles was chosen by selecting every alternate article published in these four issues. It was found that 20 articles (77%) were deficient in statistical aspects. All the 26 articles were found deficient when non-statistical errors were also taken into consideration. The errors were categorized into seven broad categories. Commonly seen errors were in data analysis, methodology and citing references. Finally, some recommendations have been made for improving the quality of published articles in Psychiatric Journals.

Dieser Anhang ist ein Beispiel fur angewandte Pharmakoepidemiologie. Er enthalt einen Satz von Formularen, die konzipiert worden sind, um veroffentlichte Studien, die mit pharmakoepidemiologischen Methoden durchgefuhrt worden sind, systematisch und kritisch zu bewerten. Den Formularen ist ein kurzer Uberblick uber Konzepte und Methoden zur Beurteilung von veroffentlichter Literatur und der Bewertung ihrer Ergebnisse sowie die wesentlichen Stationen in der Geschichte ihrer Entwicklung vorangestellt. Er zeigt, das die Entwicklung der qualitativen, systematischen Methoden zur kritischen Bewertung noch in den Anfangen steckt. Daher soll die Veroffentlichung dieser Formulare dazu beitragen, Standards zu entwickeln und zu definieren.
