TLDR
An air blower comprises a rotary fan having an array of radial blades, and a stationary bell mouth arranged in a coaxial encircling relationship to an outer periphery of the blade array as discussed by the authors.
Abstract
An air blower comprises a rotary fan having an array of radial blades, and a stationary bell mouth arranged in coaxial encircling relationship to an outer periphery of the blade array. Each blade includes an upstream side, and the bell mouth includes an upstream side. A radially inner end of the upstream side of the bell mouth is coplanar with radially outer ends of the upstream sides of the blades.

Shroud assembly for axial flow fans

Abstract: An axial fan is disclosed that includes a hub (10) supported for rotation around the longitudinal axis of the fan, a plurality of impeller blades (12) attached to the hub (16) and extending radially from the axis of rotation, a shroud assembly (34) including a band (36) encircling the blades (12) and spaced from the tips of the blades (12) a sufficient distance to provide ample clearance to avoid contact between the blades (12) and the band (36) during shipment and operation of the fan, the shroud (34) further including an orifice (38) positioned upstream of the blades (12) for preventing air from flowing between the orifice (38) and the band (36), the orifice (38) having a downstream end located adjacent to but spaced from the impeller blades (12) and having a diameter such that the impeller blades (12) extend outwardly from the hub (10) beyond the orifice (38) so that the flow of air over the tips of the impeller blades (12) is substantially reduced, which increases the efficiency of the fan
