PURPOSE:To provide a water treating agent effective for the removal of water- soluble polymer substances which are difficult to remove such as starch and polyvinyl alcohol. CONSTITUTION:A calcium compound which forms calcium oxide when baked such as calcium hydroxide, calcium carbonate, or calcium chloride is mixed with an aluminum compound which forms aluminum oxide when baked such as aluminum hydroxide, aluminum chloride, or aluminum nitrate and the mixture is baked at a temperature within the range of 1200 to 1600 deg.C. The mixture is so prepared that the weight ratio of calcium oxide to aluminum oxide is between 40/60 and 85/15, preferably between 70/30 and 80/20.
