Syntactic complexity in college-level English writing: Differences among writers with diverse L1 backgrounds

TL;DR: Differences in the syntactic complexity in English writing among college-level writers with different first language (L1) backgrounds are explored and varied patterns for L2 writing research and pedagogy and for automatic native language identification of learner texts are considered.

Measuring Syntactic Development in L2 Writing: Fine Grained Indices of Syntactic Complexity and Usage-Based Indices of Syntactic Sophistication

TL;DR: This study seeks to address L2 writing development in two main ways: through theexamination of syntactic development longitudinally and through the examination of human judgments of writing proficiency (e.g., expert ratings of TOEFL essays).

Automated measurement of syntactic complexity in corpus-based L2 writing research and implications for writing assessment:

TL;DR: The authors investigate syntactic complexity of English learners' language and raise new questions about how syntactical complexity is defined theoretically and operationally for second language (L2) writing assessme...

Linguistic complexity in L2 writing revisited: Issues of topic, proficiency, and construct multidimensionality

TL;DR: The result indicated strong topic effects on the majority of complexity measures, and lexical and morphological dimensions of complexity loaded on one construct and that the unit-length measures with different base units loaded on different constructs.

Assessing syntactic sophistication in L2 writing: A usage-based approach:

TL;DR: The construct of syntactic sophistication has been assessed in L2 writing using what Bulte and Housen refer to as absolute complexity (Lu, 2011; Ortega, 2003; Wolfe-Q...) as mentioned in this paper.

Applied Multivariate Statistics for the Social Sciences

TL;DR: In this article, the authors focus on a conceptual understanding of the material rather than proving results and stress the importance of checking the data, assessing the assumptions, and ensuring adequate sample size so that the results can be generalized.
