J. Perahia comments on the paper by J. S. Hsu (see ibid., vol.16, p.192-7, 2001) and expands on the case of a two stator three phase squirrel cage induction machine where one stator housing is stationary and other stator housing is mounted on a worm gear assembly. The original author replies to the comments.

An electric machine ( 40, 40 ′) has a stator ( 43 ) and a rotor ( 46 ) and a primary air gap ( 48 ) has secondary coils ( 47 c, 47 d ) separated from the rotor ( 46 ) by a secondary air gap ( 49 ) so as to induce a slip current in the secondary coils ( 47 c, 47 d ). The rotor ( 46, 76 ) has magnetic brushes (A, B, C, D) or wires ( 80 ) which couple flux in through the rotor ( 46 ) to the secondary coils ( 47 c, 47 d ) without inducing a current in the rotor ( 46 ) and without coupling a stator rotational energy component to the secondary coils ( 47 c, 47 d ). The machine can be operated as a motor or a generator in multi-phase or single-phase embodiments. A method of providing a slip energy controller is also disclosed.

Simplified hybrid-secondary uncluttered machine and method

A new hybrid-secondary uncluttered induction (HSU-I) machine is introduced. The hybrid secondary includes the effective-resistance, inverter, and magnetic switch options. The rotor current is magnetically coupled to the stator through an uncluttered rotating transformer. This machine can be used as a cost-effective slip-energy-controlled adjustable-speed induction motor that operates below synchronism and the wide speed-range motor drives and generators that operate below and above the synchronous speed of the line frequency.
