A knowledge of rainfall time distribution is important for several types of hydrological studies related to surface runoff. This study aims to determine the time distribution pattern of heavy rain events in Urussanga, Santa Catarina State, Brazil. It employed recording rainfall charts from the meteorological station of Urussanga (latitude: 28.31° S, longitude: 49.19° W, altitude: 49 m) from 1980 to 2007. Rain events were classified into four types according to the duration quartile in which the greatest amount of precipitation occurred. It is found that type I rain events are more frequent, followed by type II, and these occur predominantly during the summer, while type III and IV rain events are distributed throughout the year. In the summer, rain events that last for less than 12 hours are more frequent, whereas during the rest of the year, rain events that last for more than 18 hours are most common.

Knowledge of the temporal distribution of rainfall is important in several types of hydrological studies related to runoff. The objective of this work was to determine the patterns of temporal distribution of intense rains of Porto Uniao, Santa Catarina, Brazil. Daily pluviograms of the period from 1972 to 1992 were used. The rains were individualized and then were selected the rains with rainfall above a minimum value, depending on the duration. The rains were classified into four types according to the Huff quartiles. It was evaluated the frequencies of intense rains of each type by season of the year and by rain duration range. The most frequent intense rains are type I (38.8%), followed by type II (30.6%), type IV (16.5%) and type III (14.1%). Intense rains are more frequent in autumn (April to June) (32.9%) and winter (July to September) (24.7%). The highest frequency of intense rainfall (37.6%) for the duration of 24 to 48 hours. For the preparation of the design hietogram in the Northern Plateau region of Santa Catarina it is recommended to use the time distribution curve presented for type I rains with probability of occurrence of 50%.
