A circuit for increasing and regulating the voltage appearing at the input terminals of a power supply. A plurality of cascaded stages are provided. Each stage comprises: an inductive energy storage device; a switching device; a control device; and a discharge path. Control signals, having a selectable sequential time relation therebetween, are provided to the stages so that energy discharged from adjacent stages is caused to overlap in time.
