Analyzing Burdekin’s Swastika Night Piercy’s Woman on the Edge of Time and Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale the article aims to examine the relations between space, gender-based violence, and patriarchy in women’s writing. Hitlerdom in Swastika Night, the mental hospital and the future dystopian New York in Woman on the Edge of Time, and Gilead in The Handmaid’s Tale are spatial and social nightmares. The authorities that rule these dystopias imprison women in restricted spaces first, limit their vocabulary and daily actions, deprive them of their beauty, freedom and consciousness, and impose maternity or sexuality upon them. My analysis will connect the limitation of space with the psychophysical domination the objectification and the disempowerment of the female gender. Hoping also to shed light on the dynamics and the reasons for contemporary real gender-based violence and depreciation, the study will be focused on: 1. the ways space contributes to the creation, the stability and the dominion of dystopian powers; 2. the representation and the construction of female figures, roles and identities; 3. the techniques of control, manipulation and oppression used by patriarchal powers against women; 4. the impact of sex, sexuality and motherhood on women’s bodies; and 5. the possible feminist alternatives or solutions proposed by the novels.

Das dystopische Subgenre der Cyber Revolt war in den letzten Jahren in Film, Fernsehen und Literatur sehr beliebt. Bemerkenswert ist vor allem, wie haufig explizite Verweise auf feministische Diskurse in diesen Stoffen sind. Die Wahl der konventionellen Konstellation eines mannlichen Schopfers und seiner weiblichen Schopfung ermoglicht es, die Geschlechterverhaltnisse zwischen Mannern und Frauen zu verhandeln. In Ex Machina, Westworld und der Folge E.M.M.A. 206 der deutschen Fernsehserie der Tatortreiniger konnen die Darstellungen der Cyberrevolte auch als Aufstand von Frauen gegen ihre Ausbeutung durch Manner verstanden werden.Diese Filme sollten daher im Rahmen einer Wiederbelebung und Popularisierung des Feminismus (und der Angst davor) kontextualisiert werden, fur die sie moglicherweise sogar symptomatisch sind. Die feministische Kritik an der Ausbeutung des weiblichen Korpers durch das Patriarchat und die anschliesenden Fantasien einer erfolgreichen Ermachtigung von Frauen in diesen Erzahlungen werden in zwei dieser Beispiele einer weiterhin ausbeuterischen Herangehensweise an den weiblichen Korper durch die Kameraarbeit gegenubergestellt. Wahrend Ex Machina und Westworld damit die tiefen Widerspruche reproduzieren, durch die der neoliberale Feminismus gekennzeichnet ist, steht E.M.M.A. 206 im Einklang mit den Vorstellungen des Feminismus der zweiten Welle und vermeidet diese Widerspruche durch experimentelle Kameraarbeit.Publisher's note: This article was originally published as part of issue 8.1. Gendering the Machine. Cyber Revolt, the Male Voyeuristic Gaze and Fear of the Female (Body) in Ex Machina, Westworld and Der Tatortreiniger

El presente artículo tiene como objetivo dar una explicación certera sobre el modo en el que la distopía literaria feminista surge en la década de los setenta en Occidente. En el texto se propone que la literatura distópica feminista aparece a partir de la forma literaria utópica feminista. Es decir, no se atestigua el final de la literatura utópica feminista con el inicio de la década referida, sino la evolución de esta hacia otra forma narrativa adaptada a las condiciones históricas y sociales de la época, más escéptica y cautelosa. Así, la distopía feminista emerge como una manifestación artística crítica, coincidente con las olas del feminismo activista. 
Si bien, la forma clásica de la distopía siempre denotó un rechazo por los modelos utópicos, esta sufriría una transformación nunca antes suscitada, casi en contra de sus propios fundamentos. La distopía feminista guarda en sí misma las censuras a regímenes totalitarios y el rechazo a las relaciones de género opresoras, pero permite fijar la mirada en un futuro mejor, no perfecto (como el de la utopía), más bien, realizable. Las distopías feministas se diferencian de la tradición distópica clásica porque centran sus narraciones en personajes femeninos, destacando así los horrores de sociedades tiránicas sufridos específicamente por las mujeres, así como el papel activo de estas para la liberación de su comunidad.
