Vegetable crop species have been used extensively in tissue culture research Notable examples include carrot cell culture and embryogenesis research and potato protoplast manipulation and regeneration studies Many reviews have elucidated the application of cell, tissue, and organ culture techniques to vegetable crop species (eg Bottino, 1981; Harney, 1982; Ammirato et al, 1984; George & Sherrington, 1984; Sharp et al, 1984; Bajaj, 1986; Evans et al, 1986; George et al, 1987) Specifically, in vitro techniques to multiply plants by embryogenesis, organogenesis, and non-adventitious shoot proliferation are reported in the literature with many vegetable species However, unlike many ornamental and fruit species, most vegetables have received only limited commercial interest beyond research and production applications within certain private industries such as vegetable seed and plant biotechnology companies Most edible vegetable crops are seed-propagated, which is significantly less expensive than micropropagation, even when field establishment originates from hybrid seedling transplants Anderson et al (1977) estimated broccoli plant production by micropropagation to cost 116¢ US per micropropagule from the lab to the greenhouse and an additional 38¢ US per plant to achieve field transplant size The final cost (from lab to field-ready plant) in 1977 was calculated to be 154¢ US No cost comparison was given for production of comparable seedling -derived transplants
