THE PURPOSE of this paper is to describe the components of a fleet management system and the preliminary findings of two demonstration projects. Being Canadian based, the paper opens with an overview of the Canadian road-vehicle system. Statistics are given for the road network and the estimated numbers of various types of vehicles. The Canadian Vision 2000 initiative, which is being spear headed by Communications Canada, and consists of approximately 50 communications related companies working in various consortiums, is briefly described. A Western Canadian consortia, consisting of a communications manufacturer, a systems integrator and two carriers, are carrying out various demonstration projects over the next three years. The first project discussed is an assessment of current Canadian digital mapping data for the application of vehicle navigation systems and the second is a test with the Calgary Police Department using Pulsearch's NavTraxTMfleet management system in five vehicles. Some conclusions based on experience to date conclude the paper.read more

Patent
Vehicle navigation system and method
TL;DR: In this article, an improved vehicle navigation system and method uses information from a Global Positioning System (GPS) to obtain velocity vectors, which include speed and heading components, for "dead reckoning" the vehicle position from a previous position.
Patent
Vehicle navigation system and method using GPS velocities
TL;DR: In this paper, the improved vehicle navigation system minimizes both the sensor induced errors and GPS low dynamic limitations by using a zero motion detection system as a self contained (within the navigation system), vehicle independent device.
Patent
A zero motion detection system for improved vehicle navigation system
TL;DR: In this article, an improved vehicle navigation system and method uses information from a Global Positioning System (GPS) to obtain velocity vectors, which include speed and heading components, for propagating or dead reckoning the vehicle position from a previous position to a current position.
Patent
Control, monitoring, and/or security, apparatus and method for premises, vehicles, and/or articles
TL;DR: A computer-implemented method, including storing information regarding an allowed or disallowed operation of a vehicle or vehicle system, a premises or premises system, or an article in, on, or in the vicinity of, a vehicle and/or an associated with a respective user, operator, passenger, or occupant, of the vehicle or premises, is described in this paper.
Patent
Vehicle operator and/or occupant information apparatus and method
TL;DR: In this article, an apparatus including a processing device which identifies a first travel route and a transmitter which transmits the first message to a communication device located at the vehicle is presented.

GDF, a proposed standard for digital road maps to be used in car navigation systems
TL;DR: The Geographic Data File (GDF) as mentioned in this paper is a standard for the acquisition and representation of detailed and dedicated geographical information for dead reckoning and map-matching car navigation systems.
Assessment of emerging technologies for future navigation systems in canadian transportation sector
TL;DR: In this paper, the potential of emerging technologies for future navigation systems in the transportation sector during the next 25 years is assessed, as well as their potential to meet the navigation requirements of the future.
