Abstract
There are disclosed fluoroborosilicate glasses that are particularly adapted to being drawn with lead silicate core glasses to produce clad glass fibers useful in forming fiber optic bundles to be incorporated in night vision equipment. The cladding glass has a refractive index not over about 1.45 and a coefficient of thermal expansion not over about 120×10 -7 /°C. The clad fiber has a numerical aperture approximating or equal to one.

Dielectric waveguide and method of making the same

TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed a method that includes exposing a surface to a first gas composition under conditions sufficient to deposit a layer of a first chalcogenide glass (240) on the surface, and exposing the layer of the first CHG glass (120) to a second CHG under conditions that the second chg is different from the first chg.

Wide angle, narrow band optical filter

Timothy Fohl
TL;DR: In this paper, a filtering system for receiving and bandpass filtering free space optical signals is described, where a plurality of optical fibers are implanted in an embedding material, having an index of refraction which is less than the optical fiber, for collimating the optical signal.

Quartz glass preform for optical waveguide

Heinz Fabian
TL;DR: In this article, a coaxial jacket of quartz glass containing a dopant which decreases the index of refraction was used to reduce tensile strength on the core at drawing temperature of 1000° to 2500° C.

Apparatus and method for producing composite glass tubing

TL;DR: In this paper, a method of making composite glass tubing, and a molten glass feeding apparatus uniquely designed to carry out such a method, is described. And the feeder apparatus comprises concentrically-arranged cylindrical containers, a blow tube located within the central container and a plug member mounted on the base of the blow tube.

Cladding glasses for photochromic optical fibers

TL;DR: In this article, the discovery of glass compositions suitable for cladding photochromic optical fibers was discussed, which are particularly useful because, in addition to combining proper thermal expansion and refractive index with good ultraviolet light absorption, they do not deleteriously effect the natural fading rate of the photo chromic core glass during the fabrication of the cladded fiber optic.

Optical fibres and glasses

TL;DR: In this paper, a range of alkali metal borosilicate glass compositions modified by the addition of alkaline earth metal oxides has been found to be especially suitable for the production of graded index optical fibre by thermal diffusion using the double crucible method.
