An undergraduate course that focuses on the functions and role of the university would help answer that objection. Such a course has been developed at the University of Michigan and includes the following topics: the historical, contemporary, and possible future functions of higher education in society; financing the university; the campus and the city; the campus as a mass society; the need for intermediate groups; rehumanizing the campus; the structure of organizations-functioning, internal dynamics and communication patterns; educational roles-faculty, students, and administration; classroom management; and simulation learning. In this way, students may learn not only about their own institution, but also about others.
