Abstract
The thesis is presented that knowledge and use of research methodology can make a significant contribution to social work practice. Accordingly, several hypotheses regarding the potential uses of research methods are presented. Assuming that effective social work practice requires valid and reliable information, it is argued that social research methods can be regarded as a tool for gathering such information. Two strategies for the incorporation of social research methods are discussed, and their relative advantages and disadvantages are summarized. Implications for social service research are derived. Finally, it is suggested that additional strategies for incorporating knowledge of research methodology should be developed and evaluated.
