Iterative printer control and color balancing system and method using a high quantization resolution halftone array to achieve improved image quality with reduced processing overhead

TLDR
In this article, a system and method for printer control and color balance calibration is proposed to address the image quality problems of print engine instability, low quality of color balance and contouring from the calibration.
Abstract
A system and method for printer control and color balance calibration. The system and method address the image quality problems of print engine instability, low quality of color balance and contouring from the calibration. The method includes defining combinations of colorants, such as inks or toners that will be used to print images, defining a desired response for the combinations that are to be used and, in real time, iteratively printing CMY halftone color patches, measuring the printed patches via an in situ sensor and iteratively performing color-balance calibration based on the measurements, accumulating corrections until the measurements are within a predetermined proximity of the desired response. The calibration is performed on the halftones while they are in a high quantization resolution form.

Gray balance for a printing system of multiple marking engines

TL;DR: In this paper, a method for calibrating a printing system including a plurality of printers includes designating one of the plurality of printer as a reference printer and defining color values for a desired response for one or more printed test patches on a control page.

Calibration method for an imaging device

TL;DR: In this paper, a plurality of test patches in an array of orthogonal rows is formed by using at least one printhead in an imaging machine, and each of the test patches is associated with a respective one of the initial input color values.

Color characterization or calibration targets with noise-dependent patch size or number

TL;DR: In this paper, the number of repeated patches or the size of a patch of a given color is printed to be approximately proportional to the square of the expected noise level, so that when multiple measurements for a given patch are averaged, all patches have approximately the same reliability.

Method to minimize instrument differences in color management functions

TL;DR: In this paper, a thermochromatic model was proposed to estimate color measurements of color samples based on the relationship between measured colors of printed color samples on the in-line spectral sensor at the first temperature and the reference spectral sensors at the second temperature.

Method and system for processing scanned patches for use in imaging device calibration

TL;DR: Halftone-aligned averaging as discussed by the authors is a method of averaging in which the window over which an average is computed is a multiple of the halftone period, and noise reduction, in one illustrative embodiment, comprises discarding windows having an average outside of the range from the 5th to the 95th percentiles of all windows for a patch.

Method and apparatus for producing modified photographic prints

TL;DR: In this paper, a system for adjusting the density or contrast of a photographic print includes a projection lens system for projecting an image from a negative (10) onto photosensitive paper (20), where a matrix array (24) of liquid crystal display elements is interposed in the optical path in front of the print paper and transmissivity of the individual LCD elements is controlled to provide an LCD mask to control the intensity and/or color of the light falling upon the printed paper.
