A case of laryngeal leishmaniasis in a United Kingdom (UK) resident who lived in Spain for 5 years is reported.
Abstract
Background We report a case of laryngeal leishmaniasis in a United Kingdom (UK) resident who lived in Spain for 5 years. Methods and Results The patient presented with a history of hoarseness. He had returned to the UK after spending 5 years in Spain as a retiree. His past medical history includes chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Histology of a vocal cord biopsy was suggestive of leishmaniasis and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test was positive for Leishmania donovani. His use of steroid inhaler probably contributed to his acquiring this extremely unusual infection. He was successfully treated with intravenous amphotericin. Conclusions Laryngeal leishmaniasis is an extremely rare infection and is rarely reported in the UK. The ease of travel ensures that many tropical infections may present to UK clinicians. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Head Neck, 2013

Atypical presentations of cutaneous leishmaniasis: A systematic review.

TL;DR: A systematic review on atypical lesions of CL around the world, addressing clinico-epidemiological, immunological and therapeutic aspects, contributes for breaking the transmission chain of the parasite, due to early correct diagnosis which, in turn, contributes to reduce the prevalence.

Mucosal leishmaniasis with primary oral involvement: a case series and a review of the literature

TL;DR: The literature analysis revealed that in immunocompetent patients, the oral mucosa is the second most frequently affected site of the head and neck region and in the oral cavity, the tongue is the most affected site.

Lip leishmaniasis: a case series with molecular identification and literature review.

TL;DR: Seven rare cases of lip leishmaniasis in Iran are reported, the importance of clinical and diagnostic features of lesions are emphasized, the phylogenetic kinship of isolated parasites are characterized, and the literature on lip leishingmaniasis is reviewed.

Ear, nose and throat manifestations of mucocutaneous Leishmaniasis: a literature review.

TL;DR: It is important for ENT specialists and family physicians to have awareness of this condition and its clinical manifestations, particularly in presence of a history positive for travel to endemic areas, if mucocutaneous leishmaniasis is suspected.

Isolated laryngeal leishmaniasis in immunocompetent patients: an underdiagnosed disease.

TL;DR: It is believed that the rarity of the presentation and the lack of guidelines on mucosal leishmaniasis may contribute to the potential undiagnosed cases or delayed diagnosis, the possible relapses, as well as the correct pharmacological and/or surgical therapeutic approach.

A rare case of localized mucosal leishmaniasis due to Leishmania infantum in an immunocompetent Italian host.

TL;DR: The need to consider mucosal leishmaniasis in the differential diagnosis of laryngeal tumors is highlighed and Rapid nested-PCR technique and enzyme restriction analysis were useful for diagnosis and species identification directly from bioptic samples.
