Moore Chapter 1 introduces the dissertation’s thesis, highlights its methodology and establishes its goals. This dissertation argues that the divine warrior theme is a central Christological feature in both biblical and historical theology, which carries significant implications for contemporary issues in systematic theology. This chapter also sets the argument within the contemporary context of various approaches to theme of warfare in Scripture. Chapter 2 offers a historical analysis of treatments of the divine warrior theme in Christology. It reveals that prominent theologians throughout church history have recognized Christ as warrior king, particularly through their understanding of the atonement as victory. Chapter 3 explores how the divine warrior theme is a central feature in the messianic expectation of the Old Testament. It highlights how a biblical theology of warfare interplays with the Old Testament’s emphasis on the unfolding kingdom of God. Chapter 4 argues that the New Testament presents Christ as a warrior king in its messianic fulfillment. The New Testament’s treatment of the person and work of Christ presents him as a conquering messianic warrior. In addition, both the inaugurated and consummated dimensions of eschatology center on Christ the warrior king’s victory. Chapter 5 demonstrates how the divine warrior theme in biblical theology yields beneficial insights into contemporary issues in systematic theology. It examines how a divine warrior Christology contributes to evangelical theology in the areas of the atonement, salvation, eschatology, and providence. Chapter 6 concludes the dissertation by offering a summary of arguments and considering areas for further research related to the subject. It suggests that evangelical theology could benefit significantly from further exploration of the divine warrior theme in Christology. THE KINGDOM OF GOD AND THE HOLY SPIRIT: ESCHATOLOGY AND PNEUMATOLOGY IN THE VINEYARD MOVEMENT Douglas R. Erickson, B.A., M.A.C.T. Marquette University, 2015 This dissertation explores the relationship between eschatology and pneumatology in the Vineyard movement. The Vineyard movement is a growing expression within the evangelical Protestant tradition that seeks to combine the core doctrines of Evangelicalism with the experience of the gifts of the Spirit that is often associated with Pentecostalism. As a relatively new faith expression, the Vineyard has not received a great deal of academic interest, and thus much of its core theological commitments have not yet been explored. I shall argue that the central theological distinctive of the Vineyard is their understanding of the inaugurated, enacted, eschatological kingdom of God. This distinctive is evidenced by the particular understanding of the work of the Holy Spirit in the Vineyard; which is consistently expressed in praxis. The kingdom of God was inaugurated in the ministry of Jesus, is enacted in the present age, and eschatological as it both looks forward to final consummation, even as it expects the powers of the future to be manifested in the present. This thread that is woven throughout Vineyard selfunderstanding and practice was infused into the movement by its founder, John Wimber. A former Jazz musician and rock band manager, Wimber came to faith late in life, and was greatly impacted by the theology of George Eldon Ladd who spoke of the kingdom reality as “fulfillment without consummation,” known in Vineyard parlance as the kingdom that is “already but not yet”. John Wimber took this understanding of the already-not yet kingdom of God and fused it with his growing desire for and experience of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, including speaking in tongues, prophecy, and healing. To fully understand Vineyard theology, one must understand this dynamic synthesis that is different from both evangelical Protestant theology and classic Pentecostalism. This project employs both constructive systematic theology and philosophical phenomenology to examine Vineyard theology and Vineyard praxis in order to present an introduction to this unique faith expression.

The Spirit as the Lord and the Giver of Life: Recovering Relational Pneumatology and Its Significance for Being Church in Postcolonial Nigeria

The impetus of this study is grounded in the fundamental question: What is it that Origen is doing in his works? Knowledge of the Trinity and knowledge of creation are ranked first and second by Origen as “supreme functions of knowledge,” while “knowledge and understanding of oneself” is set beside this as the “height of spiritual knowledge and blessedness.” Any attempt to get to the heart of Origen’s thought must bear these foundational premises in mind. Knowledge stands between the Trinity and creation – a centre of consciousness in human being. A narrative of meaning is expressed from out of this centre, as Origen looks to either side and reveals himself to be a profoundly hermeneutical thinker. Stating explicitly that Scripture serves as “elementary rudiments of and very brief introductions to all knowledge,” Origen begins with these rudiments, and applies them to history in the experience of divinity in divine-human relations encountered in matrices of being, reason, and grace. The relation between God and the subject, operative in the threefold dynamic of being, reason, and grace, constitutes the foundational strata and conceptual nexus through which 1 Origen, CSong 2.5. 2 Origen, CJn 13.30. iii Origen’s thought is best explored. Approaching his thought in this light enables the reader to grasp the conceptual wholism, the parsing of the disparity of the world into a unified vision, which is so unique and so characteristic of Origen’s thought. The experience of being, reason, and grace points beyond to the Persons who are those qualities in essence, and who express the possibility of being, knowing, and grace. A hermeneutical circle is set in motion as one garners knowledge of the Trinity, creation, and self. Divine-human relations and all experience of the world are parsed by means of a Trinitarian hermeneutic – a cosmotheoria – through which the world is revealed to be a dynamic and cosmos of possibility in which one experiences a reification of divine will.
