of Proposed Study As Provided to Deans of Schools of Nursing and Nursing Service Directors 225 It has been widely acknowledged that a gulf has developed between nursing education and nursing service. Likewise, the necessity for nursing service and nursing education to cooperate and share their knowledge and abilities has been noted so often that it is almost a truism. Many nurse educators and nurse practititoners have worried about the problem and have written about it. However, few have studied It systematically and still fewer have been able to facilitate the clarification of roles and responsibilities necessary for cooperative efforts in providing optimum nursing care and optimum clinical learning experiences for students. One aspect of the problematic relationship between nursing edu­ cation and nursing service appears to be a lack of agreement on role expectations for baccalaureate educators and nurse practitioners on clinical units where students have learning experiences. The lack of agreement Is particularly apparent in two role-related areas: (a) determining and providing the knowledge and experiences needed by graduates of baccalaureate programs, and (b)-defining nursing standards and improving nursing practice in the hospital. A conceptual model of normative structures provides a framework for inquiry into the mutual role expectations of nurse educators of baccalaureate students and head nurses and assistant head nurses on hospital units where students have clinical experience. The study focuses on the rules and norms which, baccalaureate nurse educators and head/assistant head nurses hold for themselves and for each other relative to the two areas of role-related behaviors.
