Although the dominant political ideology in Scotland between 1707 and the present, unionism has suffered serious neglect. One of the most distinguished Scottish historians of our time looks afresh at this central theme in Britain’s history, politics and law, and traces the history of Scottish unionist ideas from the early sixteenth century to the present day. Colin Kidd demonstrates that unionism had impeccably indigenous origins long predating the Union of 1707, and that it emerged in reaction to the English vision of Britain as an empire. Far from being the antithesis of nationalism, modern Scottish unionism has largely occupied a middle ground between the extremes of assimilation to England or separation from it. At a time when the future of the Scottish union is under scrutiny as never before, its history demands Colin Kidd’s lucid and cogent examination, which will doubtless generate major debate, both within Scotland and beyond.

This article seeks to demonstrate that these contemporary questions among others, relating to Scotland and Scottish identity, can be explored through the medium of the most popular sport in Scotland Further, in an environment where everyone `volunteers' their Scottishness, the perceived cause of the Scottish international team can be utilized to investigate some of the social, cultural and political complexities that lie underneath an image of oneness This article concludes that, through the complexity of the Scottish national football side's supporters, we find that popular notions of Scotland can often be incomplete and consideration requires to be given to ethnic, religious and geographical factors in any sociological thesis relating to contemporary Scottish identity

The patriot game: football's famous 'Tartan Army'.

HERMAN Biggs, an American pioneer in public health, identified "the reduction in the death rate" as "the principal statistical expression and index of human and social progress." 2 In Twentieth Century Book of the Dead , 1 a seminal but neglected 1972 study, Scottish writer Gil Elliot distinguishes between biologic death—death from natural causes directly—and man-made death—death from war, political violence, and their attendant privations. Historians and statisticians seldom have examined man-made death beyond counting the number of combatants killed, Elliot notes, although "the scale of man-made death is the central moral as well as material fact of our time." 1(p6) Elliot's "nation of the dead," 100 million corpses, challenges that evasion with a powerful metaphor. Statistics on homicide and other unofficial violence locate and enumerate "private" man-made deaths for sociological examination and for comparison among political entities— cities, regions, and nations—by quality of life. Man-made death: a neglected mortality.

This thesis examines th� connection between the fact of 'femininity' of Indian women workers and the accumulation of wealth in Fiji over a period of fifty-one years, 1879-1930. This was the period during which sugar became the country's number one revenue earner. It is argued that Indian women's centrality to the (re)production of capital and labour stemmed from the exploitation of their labour on plantations and farms. As coloured indentured workers Indian women produced surplus for white industrial planters, and as unpaid domestic workers, they produced goods and services for Indian men. In turn, the surplus that women produced for free in the domestic arena enabled the white planter and miller to depress the wages paid to Indian men in the sugar sector and to create stability for male workers. Thus Indian women's labour in both public and private spheres created wealth which accumulated in the hands of both a class of non-producers and men. Using an array of theoretical debates derived from Marxist Thought, Feminist Theories and Race/Third World Analys�s, and fieldwork examples I argue that between 1879 and 1930 the awareness that Indian women possessed certain physiological and social attributes encouraged both white and Indian men in Fiji to exploit these women in �uch a way that money was made out of exchanging the products of their labour as well as their bodies as merchandise. These exploitative practices were submerged under a multitude of oppressive ideological messages, much of which had originated in other social and spatial contexts. The recipients absorbed messages -0f dependency that extolled the virtues of heterosexual coupling within which male dominance was seen to be in the interests of women. The private/public split, which relegated men and women to different areas of work, was maintained on the basis of power, violence and control over paid work by men. Despite these obstacles however, Indian women in Fiji continually resisted all attempts to control their bodies and wrest the products of their labour from them. The struggle between men in the Colony and Indian women for the possession of Indian women and t�� products of their labour forms the substance of this thesis.

Who is Scottish? What is Scottish? What does Scottish mean in the sporting context? International football's 'Tartan Army' of Scottish supporters is commonly viewed as amongst the most vociferous, loyal, entertaining and best behaved of supporters. This paper uses Scottish international football to explore expressions of Scottishness amongst those who regularly follow the Scottish international team. As the country's most significant and popular sport, a survey of the international football supporters partly acts as a gauge of who subscribes to current as well as dominant notions of Scottish national identities and what these mean in the context of this section of Scottish opinion. As well as assisting in an exploration of Scottish identities, this research provides comment on some of the social, religious, national and political nuances involved in Scottish football generally.
