TLDR
The pinealocytes of the pig contain a large number of aldehydefuchsin positive granules, and their morphological appearance strongly suggests that they belong to the lysosomal system.
Abstract
The pinealocytes of the pig contain a large number of aldehydefuchsin positive granules In order to determine their nature an ultrastructural study was carried out Numerous bodies having a maximal diameter of about 1,600 nm were found These elements showed a great variety of internal structure, ranging from a “homogeneous” content and amorphous dense aggregates to lamellate bodies Although only a few of them displayed a positive reaction for acid phosphatase, their morphological appearance strongly suggests that they belong to the lysosomal system

Pools of serotonin in the pineal gland of the mouse: the mammalian pinealocyte as a component of the diffuse neuroendocrine system.

TL;DR: The distribution of serotonin (5-HT) and its eventual relationships to a protein secretion were examined by means of fluorescence histochemical and ultracytochemical methods andYellow formaldehyde-induced fluorophores, characteristic of high concentrations of 5-HT, were found in pinealocytes, interstitial cells and sympathetic adrenergic nerve endings.

Cell types in the pineal gland of the horse: an ultrastructural and immunocytochemical study.

TL;DR: Morphological and immunocytochemical features support classifying them as astrocytes, probably protoplasmic, and the presence of a cavity lined with pericytes is a consistent finding and may relate to the third ventricle.

The ultrastructure of mammalian pinealocytes: a systematic investigation.

TL;DR: Whereas sufficient structural information now exists on cytoplasmic organelles such as synaptic ribbons and spherules, annulate lamellae, subsurface cisterns, and the several types of synaptic arrangements seen in relation to the pinealocyte soma and its processes, the functional role of these structures in pineal synthetic processes remains to be elucidated.

Oogenesis at subzero temperatures: a comparative study of the oocyte morphology in nine species of Notothenioids.

TL;DR: Oogenesis was examined in nine species of Antarctic fish to verify the existence of morphological peculiarities and reveal significant specie-specific differences that could be partly correlated to the phylogenetic radiation but not to the peculiar environmental conditions being essentially comparable to those observed among temperate species.

The ultrastructure of pinealocytes in the pig.

TL;DR: Pinealocytes of female pigs were studied electron-microscopically and compared with those of other mammals to find out the role of dense-cored vesicles and membrane-bounded bodies in secretory processes of pinealocytes.

Lysosome function in the regulation of the secretory process in cells of the anterior pituitary gland.

TL;DR: In secretory cells, lysosomes function in the regulation of the secretory process by providing a mechanism which takes care of overproduction of secretory products.
