Class 72 [Also in XII] A method of making steel in an open hearth furnace comprises, when the carbon content of the metal is in excess of 0.3%, adding between 200 and 1,000 cu. ft. of oxygen per ton of metal in a plurality of streams striking the bath sufficiently far apart to provide isolated reaction zones, each stream delivering more than 6,500 cu. ft. per hour at a velocity of between 400 and 1,100 feet per second. As shown, oxygen may be supplied at the centre of an open hearth furnace 2 through a lance 4 which has a number of orifices and which is spaced 6-18 inches above the bath surface. The angle the orifices make with one another and with the centre-line of the lance are so adjusted that the stream of gas from each orifice produces a separate reaction zone. The lance may be used from melting down to the end of the process when low carbon steel (carbon below 0.10%) is being produced, or, when the steel is intended to have more than 0.2% carbon, the oxygen addition is stopped when the carbon reaches 10-15 points above the tap value. It is stated that the process reduces the time required and the amount of fuel used.
