Abstract
Summary This article studies the relationship between dramatic text and performance from the viewpoint of the role played by ostension in both. Two aspects receive special attention in this regard, namely: the aspect of physical representation; and the fictional contract (contrat theâtral) made with the spectator. A short discussion is given of Pieter Fourie's Die Koggalaar (1988) to illustrate the working of ostension in this play.
