TLDR
The number of pitfalls strewn about the landscape of environmental indices is large, and as yet we have only a weak flashlight to help us grope through the dark as mentioned in this paper. But the importance of measures of the environment to a true quality of life index, must persevere in this task.
Abstract
The number of pitfalls strewn about the landscape of environmental indices is large, and as yet we have only a weak flashlight to help us grope through the dark. I have tried to illustrate a few of the main traps and mazes. There are undoubtedly more. Because of the importance of measures of the environment to a true quality of life index, we must persevere in this task.

Social consequences of economic globalization: experience of developed and developing countries and perspectives of optimization

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors determined the social consequences of economic globalization based on experience of developed and developing countries and determined the perspectives of optimization of this process through regulation, the research method is correlation analysis, for it allows determining dependencies between the indicators without requirements to their close mutual dependence.

Developing indicators of environmental quality: The experience of the council on environmental quality

TL;DR: The history of the development of environmental indices at the Council on Environmental Quality from initial research aimed at preparing one or at best a few indices of environmental quality to the most recent effort which aims to organize indicators showing conditions and trends on a wide variety of environmental topics is described in this paper.

Costs Inherent in use of Sub-Optimal Measures of Air Quality

TL;DR: The impacts of using surrogates in establishing ambient air pollution standards are explored and it is demonstrated that costs arise due to reduction in dimensionality of the set of exposure metrics, and imprecision in the relationships between the surrogate and each of the theoretically optimal metrics.
Journal ArticleDOI

Theoretically optimal environmental metrics and their surrogates

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that costs may be associated with the use of surrogates, and that these costs are caused by imprecision in the relationships between the surrogate and each of the theoretically optimal metrics, and reduction in dimensionality of the set of exposure metrics.

Vacíos en la literatura sobre filosofía de la educación ambiental: una revisión de las corrientes de la filosofía ambiental

TL;DR: A proposal of guidelines for environmental training in Colombian higher education is presented in this paper, where the authors demonstrate the void of literature on environmental education philosophy and show that despite the epistemological reflections on environmental philosophy are poor, the literature on trends in environmental philosophy is prolific.

Developing Measures of Perceived Life Quality: Results from Several National Surveys

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present the current status of a series of studies oriented toward the assessment of perceived life quality and propose a conceptual model that a person's overall sense of life quality is understandable as a combination of affective responses to life "domains" which are of two types: role situations and values.

An objective water quality index.

TL;DR: This method, which will be demonstrated below, is a distribution-free statistical procedure for mapping p-measurements on an object onto a line so that existing differences in location in p-space are preserved and gen erally more clearly defined.
