Let h1 and h2 be PL involutions of connected, oriented, closed, irreducible 3-manifolds A41, and X2, respectively. Let a,, i= 1, 2, be a fixed point of /, such that near a, the fixed point sets of /, are of the samile dimension. Then we obtain a PL involution /1 # /h2 on A41 # A42 induced by hi, by taking the connected sum of A41 and A42 along neighborhoods of a,. In this paper, we study the possibility for a PL involution h: on A41 # A42 having a 2-dimensional fixed point set I, to be of the form i1h # h2, where A4, are lens spaces. It is shown that: (1) if F, is orientable, then A41 = A12 and hi is the obvious involution, (2) if the fixed point set F contains a projective plane, then Al1=M2=a projective 3-space, and in this case, F is the disjoint union of two projective planes and h is unique up to PL equivalences, (3) if F contains a Klein bottle K, then F is the disjoint union of a Klein bottle and two points.
