TLDR
In this paper, a roll surface is treated by a usual method such as grid blasting to remove foreign matter and to give ruggedness, and the surface after the treatment is subjected to thermal spraying with metal carbides such as WC, CrC, TiC and a carbide cermet consisting of Co, Ni or their alloys.
Abstract
PURPOSE:To manufacture a roll having a high flatness and wear resistance for a rolling process by thermally spraying carbide cermet on the treated surface of a roll and performing electroless nickel plating with a Ni-P alloy on the sprayed layer. CONSTITUTION:The roll surface is treated by a usual method such as grid blasting to remove foreign matter and to give ruggedness. The surface after the treatment is subjected to thermal spraying with metal carbides such as WC, CrC, TiC and a carbide cermet consisting of Co, Ni or their alloys. Electroless nickel plating is performed on the sprayed layer with a NiP alloy. After that, as necessary, the plating layer is heat treated at a temp. of >=200 deg.C for 0.1hr. Hence, the rolling roll having good wear resistance, flatness enough to scarcely flaw a rolled stock, and a long service life is obtained.

Three-layer plated hot rolling roll

Matsuda Yukio
Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide the titled rolling roll which exhibits excellent resistance to wear at and under a high temp. and high load and prevents exfoliation of plating layers by providing successively a nickel plating layer, nickel-phosphorus alloy plating layer and chromium plating layer respectively having adequate thicknesses to the surface of the roll. CONSTITUTION:A nickle plating layer 2 having high adhesion strength, xcellent resistance to heat and not so much high hardness, a nickel-phosphorus alloy plating layer 3 having excellent resistance to heat and chromium plating layer 4 having high hardness are successively provided onto a roll base body 1 such as a hardness are successively provided onto a roll base body 1 such as a hardened roll made of a forged roll, etc. The thickness of the plating layers 2-4 are made respectively >=10mum and the total thickness of 3 kinds of the plating layers is made 30-150mum. The three-layer plated hot rolling roll having excellent resistance to wear and exfoliation is thus obtd. The rolling roll constituted in the above-mentioned way is preferably heat-treated further at about 300-800 deg.C in a non-oxidative atmosphere to form diffusion layers 5, 6, 7 on the body 1 and between the layers 2-4 to increase the adhesion. It is also possible to improve further the resistance to wear by forming a chromium oxide film layer 8 on the layer 4 by a heat treatment.
