A self-locking descender for a rope comprises a pulley in the form of a rotary cam designed to press the rope against a braking surface of a stud. The pulley is mounted on an operating plate associated with an operating handle. To reduce the unlocking force on the operating lever, a part of the friction forces is taken up by a load-shedding pin situated facing the circular sector of the cam.
